and the Appliance Parts to Fix Them
Many of the problems with any appliance found in your home can be fixed with appliance parts found in your home improvement store. We will discuss a couple minor issues and how to fix them with a little bit of know-how and the proper parts.
An appliance which is usually forgotten until it malfunctions is the toilet, there is no home without one and when it breaks down it can cause a real commotion. The most common problem with toilets is in the tank. The fill valve and the flushing mechanism with the rubber flapper are the main issues that can cause problems.
If the rubber flapper gets worn out, water will leak under it and cause the toilet to be in a state of constantly filling. Most people will say, "the toilet is running." This usually means the water leaking out under the faulty rubber flapper is causing the fill valve to keep running to try to keep the tank full. In the toilet, plumbing or appliance parts section of your home improvement store, you will find a universal rubber flapper which can be used for most toilets.
This is an easy do it yourself project, there is a chain which runs from the lift arm, (which is attached to the handle) to the flapper. Turn the water valve off at bottom of the outside of the tank and flush the toilet emptying it of water. Remove the chain from the flapper and remove the flapper from the pegs on either side. Attach the new flapper to the pegs, replace the chain and you're finished.
Another simple issue but equally as frustrating to a household is a clothes dryer which is not drying clothing properly. There are some more complicated issues that might cause this problem but it's best to start with the simplest possible solution and go from there. A clothes dryer without proper airflow in and out will not dry clothes properly. The first and easiest solution is to check the lint trap, if this is full the clothes will take much longer to dry. The next thing to check is the dryer vent hose. This is the large silver or white hose that runs from the back of the dryer to under the house or out the side of the house. This hose vents all the hot air and moisture out of the clothes dryer. If this is kinked or clogged with lint or something worse, like a rat, the clothes dryer will not dry your clothes properly. Always be sure to cover your vent with screen where it exits your house so that small animals will not have access to it. Make sure that there are no kinks in the hose as this will impede the airflow.
In many cases these easy fix solutions will take care of the problems, if not it's time to call in a professional. Many problems in the home can be fixed with a little bit of knowledge and the proper parts.
