So you want to mow your lawn for the first time this spring, and you have realized that there is a problem. It was working well the last time you used it, so what could the problem be? Common complaints include that the lawn mower will not start, it will not ignite, or the mower is running poorly. There could be many possible causes for these things. Some you may be able to fix yourself, while others require the expertise of a technician. The following discusses some of the common problems and things to check before calling the repair man.
An initial problem you may face is that the mower simply will not start. First of all, make sure that you have gas in your lawn mower. As ridiculous as this may sound, some people forget to check the basics when they begin troubleshooting. If there is gas, it is possible that the gas has just gone bad. In this case, drain the old gas and try replacing it. It is very possible that this will solve the problem. Keep in mind that it is vital that you dispose of gas properly and do not flush it down the drain, or dump it out.
If that did not work, now it is time to check the fuel line. It is possible that the valve is closed or shut off. Other possibilities include a clogged filter or vent. Other gas problems could be a flooded carburetor. In this case, it is best to sit back and wait for a little bit, then simply try again; especially if you have been priming the bulb a lot. When you do prime the bulb, make sure that gas is going into the mower; you should be able to feel the gas flowing through it. If the primer bulb appears dry, as if there is no gas going into it, then it may need cleaned.
Next, problems with the air flow could cause your mower to run poorly. You may notice that the mower will start, but then it slows down until it eventually shuts off. This is likely caused from a clogged air filter. When dirt builds up in the filter, there is no air flow to keep the mower functioning properly, so it shuts off. If that was not the problem, it is possible that your mower is getting too much air. This problem will damage the mower in the long run, so it is important to get fixed. To check the air flow, focus on the choke and verify that it is not stuck open. If you cannot see a visible problem with the choke, then it is possible your carburetor needs adjusted or cleaned.
Other lawn mower problems include determining that your mower is even getting a spark. Here is the easiest way to determine if your mower is actually getting a spark. First and most importantly, drain the gas and make sure there is no gas or vapor that could become ignited. Next, you will need a little screwdriver that has an insulated handle. Now, carefully take off the spark plug and place the screwdriver into the spark plug wire's clip. Next, using the insulated end of the screwdriver, position the metal part about an eighth of an inch from your lawn mower's engine block. Now, ask another person to assist you by pulling the starter cord. As they do this, you will watch closely as see if you notice the spark jump. The spark must be present in order to prove that your mower's ignition system is functioning well. Other things to check include the actual spark plug, for damage. You can generally pull out the spark plug itself and view the end for carbon build up. If the end appears black or dark, it is likely the spark plug causing all of your lawn mower problems. These are just some of the many possibilities that could cause your lawn mower to malfunction. If you have check all of the above and still have concerns, contact a technician to assist you with your problem.
