Most families own at least one vacuum. These appliances help keeping the home clean and tidy much easier. Before vacuums, people had to sweep their floors and go back over it to pick up any debris they miss. Because of their high level of functionality and convenience, many homeowners are upset when their vacuum breaks down. One of the leading causes of malfunction with these machines are vacuum belts.
What is a vacuum belt? It is the device that is responsible for transferring the power created by the motor of the vacuum to the brush rollers. Also known as agitator belts, vacuum cleaner belts are vital for a vacuum to be working at its optimal cleaning ability. The reason behind this logic is that without a belt, the roller brush will not move and this is the part of the vacuum that helps move the dirt towards the suctioning device.
Why do vacuum belts break? There are many reasons. Like many things, vacuum belts were not made to last forever so eventually every belt will wear out. Most vacuum belts are manufactured out of rubber, which loses its elasticity during use. Improper installation or debris getting caught in the brush roller can cause vacuum belts to break before their time. Another common issue is homeowners installing the wrong type of belt on their vacuum. What type of belts are there and how can you know which is the right one for your machine?
There are four main types of vacuum belts: v-shaped, round, cogged, and flat. V-shaped vacuum belts get their name from the fact that their width reduces inward. Similar belts are used on small engine machines like lawn mowers. These belts fit into a corresponding rut on the brush roller and allow three points of contact with the surface. They will not need to be replace for a least a year.
Round vacuum belts are the oldest type of belt that is used today. These are actually small tubes and last about between three to six months. Cogged belts, or geared belts as they are sometimes known, have notches along the inside so they can fit tightly against the sprocket of the brush roller. Since they do not depend on tension to do their job, cogged vacuum belts can last up to two years. Flat belts are the most common type of vacuum belts. With a lifespan of six to nine months, these belts work harder and slip less because of their thin design. They are often made out of synthetic materials to prolong their life.
The mistake many homeowners make when replacing vacuum belts is not purchasing a belt that is specially created for their model. Every belt is created with a specific vacuum in mind. Getting the correct match is essential to having truly cleaned carpets.
