When I finally got around to helping my son make the skate board ramp that he had wanted for quite a few years, I had to decide if I had the proper woodworking tools for the job. One of my pet peeves when working on any do it yourself project is finding that I don't have the proper tools and materials after I'm already well into the project.
Planning your project is probably the most crucial part. We sat for hours deciding how tall he wanted it and what did the radius and transition need to be. If you are mathematically challenged like me the internet has several good sources of free info on this. We finally had it figured out and were off to the hardware store to find the woodworking tools that we needed and to buy our materials for the job.
Our plan: Build two curved end pieces which fit together and a flat bottom piece making the final dimensions of the whole project, twenty six feet long by sixteen feet wide. This was no small task.
Our first step was to mark and cut the radius, to do this you need a string and a nail. Again there are several internet sources for proper guidance on this step. Once the radius is marked you will be able to cut it with your jig saw, for the size ramp we built you will need 6 of these sides out of inch plywood. The side pieces with the radius cut out of them are spaced at four feet apart and connected by two by fours. On the radius the two by fours are fastened perpendicular spaced about four to six inches apart so they look like ribs and will be able to support the plywood as you attach it.
The next step is to make the flat connecting piece which goes in between the two radiuses. Really the best way to describe this is to just frame it out like a wall with a little more support as it will take a lot of abuse. We have the whole thing level and sitting on cinder blocks to avoid direct contact with the ground and possible termites or water and such.
When this is all done it looks like a big half pipe skeleton. We then leveled the whole thing with cinder blocks before putting the plywood on. Now we're ready to cover it up, for ours we used two layers of half inch plywood and a tremendous amount of screws. Attaching the plywood to the radius takes a large number of screws.
We then water sealed and the finishing touch is a layer of four by eight sheets of 3/16 inch hard board to give it a smooth surface and you're ready to skate.
