Before the invention of the modern freezer, people kept their food cold by keeping it surrounding by ice or snow, usually in the cellar. This is where the phrase "put on ice" originated from, because people had to literally lay their meal in piles of ice in preparation for dinner. Today, the useful appliance known as the freezer allows individuals to cool and freeze their foodstuff with ease. What can you do when the freezer fails to deliver on the promise its name offers?
If your freezer is failing to keep your food frozen or even cold, do not panic and call a repairman just yet. The problem could be as simple as one of the people in your house accidently turned the temperature dial towards the warmer side of the spectrum. If that has not occurred, the next step you should take is checking if the thermostat itself is malfunctioning. To do this, turn the thermostat to a colder setting. If this makes the freezer kick on, you may need to replace this part.
If this does not change the situation, move on to the defrost timer. This part supplies the necessary heat to melt any frost that has built up on the evaporator coil. To check that the defrost timer is working properly, you must manually advance the defrost cycle. Most freezer models allow you to do this by twisting the advancement pinion clockwise with a screwdriver. Usually a fourth to three-eighths of a turn is sufficient. This whole defrost cycle should reset within a hour.
If the step above offered no fruitage, continue your inspection with the cold control. As the name suggests, this device is in charge of making sure the freezer is cold. To test it, try jumping the cold control with two wires. If this causes the compressor to power up, then your problem lays in the freezer's cold control and you will need to replace it.
One last thing to consider is to see if the compressor motor is working. This is located at the back of your freezer, usually near the floor. If it is making a humming or another steady noise, that means it is running. If you hear a clicking or buzzing noise, this could hint at an issue with the compressor's starting components or the compressor itself. You will have to check each part individually to ensure they are in working order.
If none of the tips above have affected your freezer's malfunctioning, you may need to hire a repairman. Before agreeing to some hefty sum, you should consider the years and wear the appliance has endured. The hundreds of dollars you might cause to repair it may be better spend in purchasing a newer model.
