During yard work, most homeowners give no thought to the creative minds that simplified the process of cutting grass. The Weed Eater, for example, truly changed the way people maintained their lawn. Before the Weed Eater, people had really only one choice when it came to caring for the grass in the difficult areas of their yard, such as around trees or mailboxes - they had to cut each blade by hand using manual hedge trimmers, which a basically a large, more powerful pair of scissors. Using such a tool, the job was tedious and took forever.
The creation of the string trimmer known as the Weed Eater changed all that. While it was first manufactured in 1972, it was more than a year in the making. Its inventor, George Ballas, was not a professional horticulturist. He was a dance instructor in his own studio in his hometown of Houston, Texas. You may have heard of his son, Corky Ballas, and his grandson, Mark Ballas, both of whom have performed on the hit television show "Dancing With the Stars."
So how did this expert dancer create such a legendary yard tool as the Weed Eater? While taking a break from twirling around the ballroom, George Ballas loved to spend his time caring for his two acre lawn. With more than 200 trees sprawling their roots across his property, he has a constant problem trying to get the well manicured yard he desired. While hedge trimmers did the job, they were slow and put him within striking distance of the various wildlife that made the grass their home. In fact, it was a poisonous snake bite that sent him on the search for a better way.
Ballas finally found his inspiration for the Weed Eater while taking his car to an automatic car wash near his home. For the first time in his life, he felt amazed at the way spinning nylon brushes cleaned every nook and cranny without leaving a scratch on his car. When he got home, he immediately started experimenting. Using an old popcorn can, fishing line, and the shaft of his edge trimmer, he created the first prototype of the modern Weed Eater.
After some tweaking, Ballas tried to sell the Weed Eater to several tool manufacturers, but no one was interested. Confident that he had a winner on his hands, Ballas used his own money to invest in the Weed Eater and promoted the product himself on television. Within the first year, he earned over $500,000. When the Weed Eater was purchased by Emerson Electric Company in 1979, sales have exceeded $50 million.
Today, the Weed Eater is available in a variety of models and styles. Most are several feet long and consist of two main parts - a handle, which is also used as the base for the Weed Eater controls, and a trimmer head that houses both the electric motor and plastic cord. The Weed Eater continues to be a household name, despite being over three decades old.
