Every living thing needs water to survive. As human beings, we do not willing drink dirty water as an animal might, but what choice do you have when the water coming out of your faucet is not clean? Most people turn to water filters to improve the quality of their home water and make it healthier to drink.
Why do we need water filters though? There are actually many reasons to use water filters. One is pollution and improper waste management. Thanks to the advancements mankind has made in the industrial arena, the rivers and streams have slowly become dirty. Many rivers today contain so much harmful chemicals that the water is not safe to swim in, much less drink. In fact, almost a third of the water in the United States is polluted.
There are three main types water filters. The first are called distillers. Water distillation is not a new process. Civilizations for years have boiled their water to the point of vaporization as a means of clearing away the impurities and microorganisms. Once all the water has turned into steam, it is allowed to cool and turn back into a liquid. One complaint users have with water filters that use distillation is that the resulting water tastes flat; that is because it no longer contains dissolved oxygen. This process also no effective if the water contains chemicals with boiling points below that of water. Volatile substances, such as ammonia, are also not separated out through with distilling water filters.
Other water filters use reverse osmosis. This procedure was originally created to remove the salt from ocean water and therefore make it able to be drank. The basic process consists of separating two liquids of varying concentrations by a slightly permeable membrane. In home filtering systems, water is pressure forced through very fine membrane that only allows single molecules to pass through. This helps guarantee the removal of a high amount of contaminants. Reverse osmosis water filters are the most widely used type in the world and produces clean water with removing the oxygen molecules. The largest flaw in this system is that five liters of unpurified water may only produce one liter after filtering.
Carbon water filters are the last type that is readily available on the market. These water filters are usually used to treat water that have either an unpleasant odor or taste. To clean the water, the liquid is poured through a carbon filter; during this process, the contaminants in the water are drawn to the carbon particles present in the filter. These filters can remove a variety of impurities such as minerals, pesticides, and other chemicals. The resulting water is deemed the cleanest produced from all popular filtering methods.
When choosing water filters, it is best to first decide what unwanted substances are contained in your water. If this is not considered when you choose your water filters, you may not end up with as clean of water as you desire.
