The garbage disposal - the great little appliances attached to the bottom of your sink that allows you to get rid of disgusting or messy kitchen wastes with ease. The average garbage disposal is meant to last between ten to twelve years. To get the most out of this device, keep the following tips in mind each time you turn your garbage disposal on.
The main thing to remember is to not try to put anything hard down the drain. This will make your garbage disposal shredder dull, decreasing its efficiency. Tiny hard objects have also been known to get stuck in the rotating parts, preventing any further movement. Each garbage disposal model is different when it comes to how hard is too hard. Consult your instruction manual to find a list of things your garbage disposal can and cannot handle. Use the trash can for items like unpopped popcorn, shellfish shells, and chicken bones.
Your garbage disposal should also not be used for any fibrous or starchy items. These are the leading cause of drain clogs because of their thick and stringy composition. The foodstuff to look out for are celery, peels of bananas and potatoes, the husk and cobs of corn, artichokes, coffee filters and grounds, fruit pits and seeds, onion skin membranes, and egg shells. If you have no choice but to use the garbage disposal for the items listed above, be sure to limit the amount and chopped them in very small pieces beforehand.
The garbage disposal is not a trash can. It was designed to pulverize organic waste, but whatever is lying around your home. Items that should not be flushed down the drain, but often are anyway leading to disastrous results include rubber bands, soda pull tabs, bottle caps, twist ties, glass, metal or plastic silverware, cigarettes, cigars, pieces of paper, bits of string, screws, nails, old bouquets, spongers, fabric, hair, grease or fat.
You should never try to shove large items down tour garbage disposal. This is not only dangerous, but it also caused premature dulling of the blades. For bigger organic items, like the rinds of honeydew melons or cantaloupes, chop them up into smaller pieces before trying to dispose of them. If you have a lot of large pieces on your hands, save yourself time and just toss them in the trash can.
Every time you turn your garbage disposal on, do you turn on your faucet as well? You should. You need to run cold water the entire time you are using the garbage disposal and for about a minute after you finish. All the waste you just feed into the drain as quite a ways to go and the journey is easier with water pushing it onward. Cold water also helps the motor and blades from overheating while doing their duties. Never run hot water - this can cause the fat on foods to melt, which will clog the pipes when it cools down.
