It seems like you see more and more home owners buying power washers for personal use whether it is to wash their cars and trucks or even their homes. There are some schools that use them for activities like car washes during the school year to raise money for school functions. No matter the reason behind it, power washers are only as good as the parts they are functioning with. The better the parts, the better the machine will run. It is only common sense.
A pressure washer has two major parts: a motor and a water pump. A pressure washer can be ran by gasoline or by electricity but eventually both will need some kind of repair. A water pump is more reliable than an engine so that is a plus but even they will need to be repaired on occasion. The hoses are what really need replacing often or the couplers that connect those hoses. Below is a short repair guide on how to fix an engine or a pump or to at least see what is happening.
For Water Pumps: - The first thing you want to do is look at the sight glass. It is located near or on the pump itself. Some models do not use the sight glass so make sure that they do first (Refer to the owner manual). Always make sure that the oil is at the right level and if it is not at the right level then use the right pump oil to get it there. The next thing you want to do is take off the water pump cap and perform an oil check while the pump is still cold. Again make sure the level is where it should be. The oil in your water pump should never be cloudy, ever. If it is then this means that there is something wrong with the pump and you should have it looked at. Take off the pump by removing it completely from the washer and have all o-rings and seals replaced. You might want to repack the pump too.
Gas Engines- Make sure you are using a fuel additive that is water soluble when you go to add it in when the washer will not start. Always read the owner's guide and follow the recommended instructions on how to get an engine started. See if the hook the fits around the spark plug is loose or tight. If it is loose, then that could be your problem. Using pliers can tighten it up real quick. Checking the filters and the pre-cleaners to see if they are dirty can help to see if that is the reason the engine is having issues. You can actually use a high powered air hose to blow out any kind of residue or dirt in the lines or tap on it to help clean the filter.
