A lot of guys who have just graduated from college or just got a university degree have absolutely no idea how to transition their fashion to a corporate setting. Like women, men's apparel features stark differences between the casual and formal. While it is true that there are in-between situations of 'smart casual' attire, it still makes a big difference for a guy to know how to dress formally. After all, in a lot of cases, the right attire and appearance can get a struggling newly grad his first job!
Of course, it goes without saying that the attire that a guy should wear to the office will depend on the company or firm's dress code. Many IT upstarts and 'young companies' prefer to have their employees 'dressed down' so that they can be most 'at home' in the place they work. On the other hand, the more traditional companies would require their employees to be more formal. Moreover, there are also companies that require their people to dress more formally depending on their job designation. For example, banks require their frontline personnel to dress more formally, or in a uniform, to uphold the formal image of the company. But then, there are also those who allow casual wear, so that their client relations personnel can present a more approachable, friendlier atmosphere.
However, whether a company requires formal attire or allows more casual clothes, fit is still important in men's apparel. Casual clothes for the workplace should still look smart. There is nothing more sloppy looking than someone wearing clothes that are too loose at work. Moreover, it is best to avoid shirts that have tackily huge logos and insignias. Men's casual clothes for the work place should spell comfort, not for a guy to be a walking advert for some clothing company.
A lot of men entering the workplace feel that the only way to go is spend so much money shopping for branded clothes. Actually, as someone who is just new at work, nobody really expects you to have very expensive clothes. As long as your clothes look sharp and clean, you will get noticed. So, don't go spending your first paycheck on designer men's apparel. Invest on a good number of 'generic' shirts and pants that are made of good material. Leave the fashion show for the big bosses, or those with the six-figure paycheck. You'll get there in the future. For the meantime, don't be too brand conscious.
The essentials that you'd need are:
Two suits, single breasted and two-piece. You will never go wrong with this design, because the two-button and three-button looks come in and out of fashion at times. As for color, navy and gray are better options than black, as the latter is too somber, and the two former colors can be better matched with colored shirts.
Dress pants in black, navy, dark gray, plus khakis will also be enough for a week. Stay away from cargo pockets if you want a more formal look, obviously.
Three white and two light blue shirts will get you through the working week.
