Wine cellars are most perfect when it comes to storing rare and great wine. This is because a cellar allows the wine to age at a slow pace, making it morph into wine that has a complex level of taste and a richer aroma. In the cellar, the perfect conditions are met for the slow aging process. It has the perfect level of temperature, around 12 to 16 degrees, it has the right humidity percentage, around 60% to 80%, it allows little to no UV light to hit the wine and it allows the wine to sleep peacefully, with as little vibrations as possible. All these conditions make the wine transform beautifully.
But not everyone has the luxury or the money to create a wine cellar. Wine cellars cost at least $45,000 each to build and that does not even consider the space they will eat up in one's basement. So are there alternatives for wine cellars?
The first alternative is a wine room. If you do not have an underground space or if your basement is full of other things and you cannot simply just convert it to a wine cellar, but you do have the budget and time to create a room especially for your wine, then this is your alternative.
The first difference of the room and the cellar is that the room you choose should be as far away from vibrations as possible. Locating it in a place that is near constant movement, like a kids' playroom, will speed up the chemical reaction of the wine. This will ruin the great taste of the wine as complex flavors are brought about by a slow aging process. Secondly, the wine room needs to have a thicker insulation, especially if one wall of it faces the outside world or is in the path of sunlight during day time. A thicker insulation allows for an easier maintenance of the room climate.
The second alternative is wine racks. Wine racks can easily be installed and they come in different materials so they should easily be able to blend in your home dcor. However, the problem with wine racks is that they are dependent in a house' ambient temperature. This means that wine will become susceptible to the intense temperature fluctuations in the house, which is not something you would want to subject your wines as this speeds up aging. This option is only for those who can find a location inside the house that stays constantly cool.
The third alternative is a wine cabinet. Wine cabinets usually store less than 500 bottles of wine and are very similar to wine cellars expect for their size since they maintain an ideal aging climate for the wine. There are also different types of wine cabinets. There are serving cabinets, which are usually ones stored in the kitchen, this is where wine that is about to be served is stored. There are maturing cabinets, these are the ones that mimic the properties of wine cellars but at a smaller scale.
