Wine cellars are not easy to build. If you are a greenhorn when it comes to making builds, then it may be best for you to leave wine cellar construction to the experts.

But if you think and know that you have the proper skills to create a wine cellar of your own, then keep on reading. Here are some tips on how to plan when you are building your very own wine cellar.

Location

Consider first where in your home you will be putting your wine cellar in. Wine cellars need to be cool, damp, dark and they should be located in a place as far away from human traffic as possible. The most ideal place to put your wine cellar in is underground which is a naturally cool, dark and damp place. However, if you do not have a basement at all, then an alternative is to locate it in a room nestled within the house, with no walls facing the outside. That will allow for an easier control of the cellar's environment.

This is also part of the first things that need to be considered because if the cellar will not be made in the basement, then artificial cellar coolers will need to be bought and installed.

Capacity

What will be the maximum number of wine bottles that you want to be stored in your cellar? You need this data so you can approximate the racks that you will be ordering or creating. This is something you need to know in the actual building phase of the cellar.

Power Source

If you will be installing wine cellar air conditioning, lighting and humidifiers, then you will need to have a power source where electricity can flow to these equipment. By this stage, you will also have to decide if you will be handling the electricity wiring yourself or if you will have to hire an electrician to do the job for you.

Insulation

Depending on where your cellar will be located, the insulation type will follow. If your cellar is deep in the heart of your basement, then an R-13 insulation will already work for the walls, provided that no wall hits the outside environment. However, for the ceiling, still put R-19 insulation. Any wall that will face sunlight will also need the same type of outside insulation.

Door

Wine cellars are effective because they have their indoor climate that the "sleeping" wine needs so it can age in a perfect speed, allowing for its taste to have different levels and its aroma intoxicatingly good. Thus, doors found in wine cellars need to be able to keep the elements out, like a steel door used in the garage or an anti-rot wooden door. Doors used by wine cellars are also heavily insulated.
