Wine cellars are persnickety. For them to function as they were intended to work, there are a number of conditions that need to be satisfied. Once all conditions are covered, that is the only time that a wine cellar will be able to fully fulfill its duty as the perfect storage for the wine aging process.
Condition 1: Temperature
Wine needs to be stored in temperatures within the range of 12 degrees to 16 degrees Celsius. Any cooler than 10 degrees Celsius and there can be deposits that will form in the wine which are very unsightly and unappetizing. But the real problem lies when the temperatures go skyrocketing to more than 18 degrees Celsius. The wines will initially start losing their crisp taste and as the temperature goes up, they would end up getting spoiled.
Some basements where cellars are located are able to keep ideal temperatures year round. For most wine cellars though, they have a wine cellar cooling system that maintains the environment at a cool level.
Condition 2: Humidity
For the proper aging process, wine needs to be stored in an area with 60 percent to 80 percent humidity. Humidity is needed to keep the cork from drying up. The cork though, can also be kept damp by storing it in such a way that the cork is constantly in contact with the wine inside. This can be done through horizontal wine racks.
There are wine cellars that have humidifiers built in to keep the proper dampness in the atmosphere. Another strategy in keeping a cellar damp is by laying 1 inch thick of gravel on the floor of the cellar. Then sprinkle this with a bit of water.
Condition 3: Lighting
Did you know the reason why wine used to only be placed in dark bottles? The answer to this is that wine is affected by light. Too much direct light exposure will ruin the wine. Ultraviolet light causes a chemical reaction to happen to the wine, affecting its delicate taste.
On top of that, improper lighting and high voltage lighting can also cause the temperature to go up, which also has a bad effect on the aging process of the wine.
Condition 4: Vibration
When wine is let to "sleep," the chemical reaction that follows with wine aging is slowed down. This gives the wine the ability to produce complex tastes and richer aroma. However, when it is vibrated, the chemical reaction is sped up, which makes the aging process pick up its pace. That in turn will result to the wine not having enough time to develop a great aroma and taste that is accompanied by a slower aging process.
These may seem that there are a lot of conditions that need to be fulfilled to make a good wine cellar. That is definitely true. But once all these conditions are fulfilled, then your wine cellar will be a great addition to the many great wine cellars in the continental United States.
