What are wine cellars? If you are looking for the definition of this, then you have come to the right place. Simply put, a wine cellar is a storage space where one puts bottled and barreled wines in order to keep them from spoiling. Like food, wine can easily get spoiled if it is placed in a location where the temperature drastically fluctuates.
How it works
A wine cellar essentially controls the environment where the wine is stored. It makes sure that the wine stored in this area ages properly. In the proper conditions, wine can age beautifully, making its taste bolder and more pronounced over the years. What the cellar does is it makes sure that the environment where the wine is left is stable enough so that the wine does not experience drastic changes in temperature which may cause it to spoil.
This type of cellar ensures a consistent temperature for the stored wines. There are some cellars that are passive, meaning they do not have a mechanical air conditioning system to ensure that the temperature is constant. These types of cellars maintain a cool temperature naturally. These are usually found in basements or caverns below houses where it is normally cool and damp.
There are also active cellars that have internal climate controls that ensure the room is within the perfect temperature in keeping wine, which is approximately around 12 to 16 degrees Celsius. Leaving to cellar to cold will cause particles to emerge from the wine, having it too hot and the alcohol separates.
If the area where the wine is kept is too dry, such type of active cellars also work on maintaining a good humidity level for the cellar, preferably around 60% to 80%. Humidity is needed to ensure that the corks do not dry out. If they do dry out, this will cause air to allow itself inside the wine bottle, having an adverse effect to the wine's taste.
Wine cellars may they be passive or active, are built so that the wines are stored horizontally on the rack. This is done for the same reason why cellars are kept humid - to ensure that the wine bottle's cork is dampened.
These cellars also ensure that lighting and vibrations in the area are constant. There should not be too much light exposure as harsh lights can cause sediments to emerge. And the reason why the wine is kept at a very level and stable environment is because vibrations from traffic also cause aged wine to get sediments. Thus, it is not ideal to have a cellar where human traffic is continuous. The cellar's location should not only be cool, dark and damp, it should also be traffic-free.
Thus, if you have a great collection of good and rare wines, it is really a good idea to invest on a cellar. Wine cellars may be costly but the benefits one can reap from maintaining a good environment for the aging wine is priceless.
