Helmets are motorcycle equipment that should not be skipped. They not only provide protection but do so to the most important part of the body - the head. Considering how many people encounter vehicular accidents every year, it would be foolish to drive while not wearing a helmet.
However, that doesn't mean that any helmet type would do. The fact is that there are several types of helmet and people should choose one depending on the level of protection they get. The more protection, the better would they fare in the event that any crashes take place. That being said, following are some of the motorcycle helmets types.
Dome Helmets
Also known as skull caps, these helmets protect only the top part of the head. The ears are exposed and the helmet offers very little resistance to the air. In most cases, half helmets are only worn because the state requires motorists to wear a helmet while on the road. However, this is actually a bad thing as half helmets offer very little protection for its wearer. When a person is thrown off their vehicle, the back of the head usually hits the ground - not the top part. Hence, there's really zero protection at all for the driver.
Half Helmets
Some people call these helmets because they actually cover more than half of the head. In some cases, they are also called "open face" helmets since the wearer has their face exposed to the elements. Basically, this motorcycle equipment protects the, sides, top the head and back of the head. Some say the item is as good as a full-face helmet, especially for those who like to keep their face exposed to the air when driving. The only thing lacking with this motorcycle equipment is the visor, making it necessary for wearers to purchase a different item to protect their eyes.
Full Face Helmet
The full face helmet protects practically everything but the neck and what's below it. The motorcycle equipment protects the back, the top, the sides, the chin and even the front part of the head. As helmets go, this is the top gun and is the perfect product for motorcyclists. The level of protection this type of helmet provides is such that motorcycle racers use this for their race. The only problem with this helmet is that some users might not like the level of restriction they get with it. However, the fact that it can stop them from getting serious injury after a crash should be worth it.
So basically, it would always be better for motorcyclists to purchase full coverage motorcycle equipment. They should be happy with the level of protection this product provides, lessening damage risks in the event of an accident. Ideally, motorists should always keep two of this to provide protection for any passenger they might take on their vehicle.
Keep in mind that there are several things to consider when buying a motorcycle helmet means like the size and fit of an item. Combine the helmet with other motorcycle equipment like gloves, pants and boots for full-body safety.
