When people talk about motorcycle equipment, the first things that come to mind are leather pants, a leather jacket, and a mean looking pair of leather gloves. In fact, leather is some sort of a classic where gear for the motorbike is taken under consideration. These days, people have come up with other sorts of materials that can be used as substitutes. People may quarrel one over the other but looking into the details of each of the alternatives might help settle the score.
Weighing the Pros and the Cons
As stated earlier, leather is a classic for motorcycle equipment but not only for providing that signature look on a biker. Leather also gives the rider a degree of comfort especially when dealing with the harsh outdoor weather of the open road. It provides both warmth and protection from cold temperatures and keeps the heat away when the sun is up.
Leather also has abrasion resistant qualities that ensure years of service given the proper care. It can do all that and keep the precipitation away as long as the owner remembers to tend to it with the required degree of attention.
Synthetic materials on the other hand can also supply the said benefits only that they can't do it just the way leather does. One flaw present with all synthetic materials is reduced abrasion resistance. However, compared to leather, synthetic materials require less care and will provide better protection from rainfall. Synthetic materials can be easily washed and are generally lighter when worn by anyone riding a motorbike.
Now, some synthetic materials do not afford the rider the same degree of protection that leather provides. Some synthetic fibers are definitely thinner by comparison and in the long run will be easily worn out after a good amount of usage. Nevertheless, although leather provides an overall better degree of protection from the elements, it tends to restrict the rider's movements.
Note that leather is usually bulky especially when fitted as a jacket to be worn by a rider. On top of that, owners will also be required to put some extra care in preventing the build up of mildew. Another disadvantage of leather materials is the stench that seems to build up over time, which may be a bit difficult to remove especially in the case of leather jackets.
Looking at the things considered so far, it appears that leather is a better choice for motorcycle equipment especially for people who are looking for better protection from the elements. However, those who are looking for equipment that is easy to clean minus the smells and required tedious care then synthetic materials are far better.
One final factor that everyone will want to consider is the cost of both leather and synthetic materials, which may take the cake for most people nowadays. Considering the cost, leather definitely costs more than synthetic materials. Considering leather jackets alone, they would cost from $250 to $450, which is easily seen as too pricey. In contrast, synthetic jackets only cost around $100 on average, which is a pretty attractive price any day. These are some of the things that would easily come to mind when people consider the different types of motorcycle equipment available out there.
