It has been a month since you bought and installed your area rugs around the house and you are wondering how you can keep it looking at its best one or three years from now. Rugs can do their duty on their own-beautify the area, protect the floor cover, provide support and cushion to the foot, and absorb stains and minor spills-but like any other appliances or gadgets, they need cleaning from time to time and overhauling as well. And since washing big and heavy rugs deserves a whole Saturday morning devoted entirely to it, what you can do is to minimize the frequency of you having to take it out for cleaning regularly. Is there a way for you to do that? Certainly.
So if you want to know some tips on how to best take care of your area rugs, read the following tips and start applying them today in your house. This way, you can save yourself from humongous effort and cleaning expenses and enjoy your rugs to the fullest. Who knows it could just last you a lifetime?
Tip 1: Vacuum your Rugs
Well, let's face it, vacuums are made for carpets and rugs. But of course before you follow this advice, make sure first that your rug is vacuumable. There are many materials used to make rugs and some of them need no vacuuming at all. Leather, flokati, bamboo, and sisal rugs can be shaken instead of vacuumed. Expensive rugs should be vacuumed everyday to retain its original form but since this is not always possible, especially for busy people, one tip for homeowners is for them to keep the plush rugs on spots where there is relatively lighter foot traffic.
Tip 2: Rotate your Rugs
Once a year, it is recommended that you rotate your rug by turning it 180 degrees. This helps even out the wearing of the rug as foot traffic tends to concentrate more on some parts of an area rug and leave other spots freely on its back. If a part of the rug is exposed to sunlight, rotating it can balance the fading of colors and patterns as well. This will lengthen the life of your area rugs and lessen the damage done by external factors.
Tip 2: Roll, Don't Fold
Rugs are meant for rolling, not folding. Sure you fold your blankets and comforters but never ever your carpets or area rugs. Folding deteriorates the folded corners of the carpet and may affect its appearance when done repeatedly in the long run. Also, when transporting it to another place, avoid piling up heavy materials on it. But if you are space-cramped and you really need to put something above it, make sure it won't be any heavier than a lampshade.
Tip 3: Store Them Clean
If you are planning to store it for a long time, have your rugs cleaned by a professional rug cleaner to ensure all sides of the rug has been thoroughly cleaned. Have it mothproofed for better protection as well. Also, when storing, do not use plastic to wrap it because mildew might develop once it acquires moisture. Use a clean, breathable material as casing instead.
