If the room uses a monochromatic scheme, you can go for the same color but one with a lighter or darker tone. 2. Design

Another element to consider is the design of the rug. Contemporary design calls for contemporary-patterned rugs and traditional country designs involves use of floral patterns and rustic scenes. When choosing a design, select one which has the right colors. If the room looks bare and plain, choose area rugs that are dotted with prints and probably well-textured to wash away the aura of plainness. However, if the furniture, drapes and curtains already make the room look stuffy, you may opt for a plain-colored or low-key looking area rug to lighten the space a little.

3. Materials

It is also important to consider the material used to make the rug. People who have sensitivities to fur or certain fibers need to do rigorous examination first before taking anything home. Basically, rug materials fall into one of these two categories: man-made and synthetic. Wool, silk, cotton, jute, bamboo, and viscose are some of the most popular natural materials. Polypropylene and nylon are synthetic materials used to make these types of rugs as well.

4. Size

Varying spaces require use of varying sizes of area rugs, too. If you plan to make it the central focus of a space, it must be just the right size-not scanty, not overbearing. If on the other hand you want to put it under the dining table, it should be larger than the table to be able to support the chairs when in use. For bedrooms, usually, the bigger the better. In the hallways, long runners are the best choices.
