Using area rugs is a great way to add life to a plain-looking room. If chosen well, the softness, color combination, and texture of the rugs help complement and compliment the theme of the room and also give an illusion of a bigger or narrower space. A rug, aside from the aesthetic value it gives, provide support to the feet and protect the surface of the floor against occasional spills, dust, dirt, and other matters that could damage it.
But the thing about rugs is that you cannot just pick any area rug from an upholstery shop and lay ot down on your living or study room. For it to serve its purpose well, you have to follow some basic rules in buying area rugs. So here are 6 things to consider when planning to buy area rugs:
1. Color
Did you know that thirty percent of the room's overall color is attributed to the color of the floor? It's that big a share when you look at the entirety so it is important that you choose a color that suits the paint and accents on the wall and ceiling of the room. If the room uses a monochromatic scheme, you can go for the same color but one with a lighter or darker tone. If the room has multiple colors, just pick a rug that carries one or two colors depicted on the wall or ceiling. The trick in choosing the right color is having an eye for blending and of course, common sense. Pink and blue goes well, but pink and red?
2. Design
Another element to consider is the design of the rug. Contemporary design calls for contemporary-patterned rugs and traditional country designs involves use of floral patterns and rustic scenes. When choosing a design, select one which has the right colors. If the room looks bare and plain, choose area rugs that are dotted with prints and probably well-textured to wash away the aura of plainness. However, if the furniture, drapes and curtains already make the room look stuffy, you may opt for a plain-colored or low-key looking area rug to lighten the space a little.
3. Materials
It is also important to consider the material used to make the rug. People who have sensitivities to fur or certain fibers need to do rigorous examination first before taking anything home. Basically, rug materials fall into one of these two categories: man-made and synthetic. Wool, silk, cotton, jute, bamboo, and viscose are some of the most popular natural materials. Polypropylene and nylon are synthetic materials used to make these types of rugs as well.
4. Size
Varying spaces require use of varying sizes of area rugs, too. If you plan to make it the central focus of a space, it must be just the right size-not scanty, not overbearing. If on the other hand you want to put it under the dining table, it should be larger than the table to be able to support the chairs when in use. For bedrooms, usually, the bigger the better. In the hallways, long runners are the best choices.
