Space heaters are undoubtedly one of the best ways to warm cold and chilly rooms for comfort. Such devices can also help save on energy bills since they allow you skip on the central heating during mild fall and on some occasional spring days. During winters, a space heater inside a room also allows you to lower your thermostat temperature.
Among the heater types available in the market these days, the electric space heater is found to be the safest to use inside insulated rooms. Comparison reviews claims that new space heater types comes with new and better safety features like an automatic tip-over switch, a remote control and overheat protection. These features are always good news, but you still have to follow the basics of safety precautions. According to authorities, space heaters to date remain responsible for 30% of home heating incidents within the U.S. - that's about 21,000 fires in just a single year alone. What's more troubling is the fact that such heater types are also responsible for about 80% of the recorded deaths in heating fire incidents.
Experts are also claiming that most of today's space heater-related fire incidents are caused by heaters positioned carelessly too close to window curtains, combustible materials and upholsteries. Having a 3-foot clearance is highly encouraged. It would also do you good to make sure that your space heater should not be left operating whenever the room is empty, or especially whenever people inside are still sleeping. It will also do you good to purchase a smoke detector so you can test your heater regularly.
If you plan to stay inside your room for just a short time, a radiant heater will work for you best. Not only is it inexpensive when compared to the other popular convection heater type, it also functions to provide specific areas in your room with quick heating. It works primarily by directing electricity into a ribbon element (quartz tube), which then generates warmth right in front of the radiant heater. This makes it a very good choice for warming up small spaces inside rooms (cold and chilly corners inside offices).
The downside is that radiant heaters are not capable of distributing heat far away from their heating elements. You cannot hope to raise your room's temperature with a radiant heater. The heating element also gives off that distracting reddish glow that others found distracting. What you need specifically in this case is the convection type space heater.
The convection space heater heats up whole rooms faster than its radiant heater counterpart. This is perfect whenever there are some people residing around the room (or moving around inside it). Some models have fans to distribute the warmth all over the room.
Just like radiant space heaters, the convection types use various heating elements. The ceramic disc heater can cost anyone up to $150 and capable of producing a decent amount of heat around the room in just an hour. Both water and oil-filled varieties are known to be very efficient convection heaters because of the water/oil heating element that can cycle heat whenever you want it to.
