Space heaters are self-contained devices used for heating up certain enclosed areas. Space heating basically applies to small spaces by warming them up to a certain point. The concept plainly contradicts with the idea of central heating, which calls for heating connected spaces at the same time. Such machines are available as wall-mounted or portable systems, and must be considered an electric heater in many cases since natural gas or even propane heating in enclosed areas are dangerous prospects without specialized ventilation systems.
Electric heating is that process of converting electrical energy into pure heat. We see all of its common applications in space or water heating, cooking and other industrial processes. The heating element found inside every electric heater consists of your average electrical resistor; it basically works on the Joule heating principle - electric currents passing through resistors are what converts electrical energy into heat energy.
A space heater can be subdivided into the apparatus that primarily transfers heat through radiation, or by convection.
Radiative Heater
In a radiative heater structure, tungsten filaments attach themselves to halogen heaters through heat-resistant quartz envelopes, and are mounted fronting a metal reflector within a plastic case. These operate just like halogen light bulbs, though they mainly radiate their energies through infrared spectrums. A radiative heater is capable of converting up to 86% of the total input power into radiant energy, while losing the remainder both convective and conductive heat.
The advantage of using halogen heaters is the radiation produced that is absorbed directly by the clothing materials and the human skin without ever having to heat up the air around the space. This suits people inside poorly insulated rooms well, and it can even work outdoors.
Convective Heaters
In a convection heater system the heating elements function either by warming the air directly or heating oil (or other fillers used in some cases) to transfer the heat into the air. The air in turn will warm up people and objects within the space. Convective space heaters are ideal for a constant and diffuse heat inside insulated structures.
Oil heaters may be a bit slow to warm up, but you can be certain they do not reach dangerous temperatures. Another type, which is categorized as the wire-element heaters (can be a fan-assisted system) may be able to reach operating temperatures fast but is considered a fire hazard. The fan heater is a good example of the convective heater.
Safety Issues
There are two main health risks associated with the use of the space heater: the risk of poisoning from carbon monoxide and the risk of starting fires. The former is traced back to both gas and kerosene heaters, and not the electric heater types. Fire risks from electric space heaters may be checked through low-surface temperatures (particularly in oil-fueled convective heaters), or through switches that functions to cut power automatically in situations where the device is accidentally knocked off its place. This is often a feature found in halogen heater bases. The same can also be said about the thermal cutout switch feature.
