This is because pearls are porous thus when such substance gets into them, they become dull and will lose their shine. Makeup, perfume, cream, hair spray and lotion should not get on them. As a tip, it would be better to wear your pearls after you have put on these substances and your body has absorbed them.

As much as possible, do not wear your pearls often. You are prone to perspire every day thus this will also let your pearl jewelry lose its shine. You should also take off your pearls before taking a shower, having a swim or washing your hands.

After using your pearl, wipe them gently with a dry, clean and lint-free cloth. A pearl necklace should be restrung annually so that they will not come lose. Always use natural fiber or silk for the string. For the pearl stones not to rub against each other, the jeweler must place a knot in between them. Should the strand break, only a few pearls will scatter on the floor and not the entire necklace.

Clean your pearls with water, a mild soap or baby shampoo and wipe them dry with a soft cloth.

People use toothpaste to wash their pearls but this should be avoided as toothpastes have rough particles that will harm the pearl's surface. You should also refrain from using bleaches, baking soda, dish detergent, powdered cleansers or any product with ammonia or essential oils as these are very strong and will make the pearls dull. Never use a toothbrush or any hard material in cleaning your pearls as these may scratch them. You can go to your jeweler to do the cleaning for you and ask from him the perfect cleaning solution.

When you store your pearl jewelry, place them in a jewelry box or pouch made of soft fabric such as velvet. Never let them stick to each other so that rubbing would be avoided. Pearls are so gentle that they can be easily scratched by any rough surface. Your jewelry box can have a soft strap for the pearl to stay in place. It would be best to have a separate jewelry box or pouch for them.

If you learn to safeguard your pearl jewelry, you will preserve them for a long time and even pass them on to the future generation.
