Table tennis is a sport whose origin is very hazy. This makes a retelling of ping-pong's history a very lengthy exploit but this article will attempt to make a sneak peek into the long past of this indoor sport.
If patent will be the basis of who is the father of table tennis as an active sport, then the answer is David Foster. This Englishman invented the game on 1890, when he filed for the English patent of it on July of said year. However, 3 years before that, on 1887 a New Yorker by the name of J.H. Singer registered the actual name of table tennis itself as a board game.
But before Singer or Foster patented the active game and the board game, it is believed that the game's concept really started in as far back as 12th century. Records in the British army also indicate that a full decade before the patent, the British officers in India and Africa were already playing a version of ping-pong using cigar box lids and balls made from wine corks.
Various permutations of the game soon came, stemming from the popularity of the game lawn tennis and people looking for indoor alternatives to it. A man from London named John Jaques registered a game similar to ping-pong, calling it "Gossima." It is a game that used paddles like drums and a 50 millimeter cork ball wrapped in webbing. As for its net, it used a 30 centimeter high net. Another person in London by the name of Emma Barker also applied for the American patent on a game she called indoor tennis.
The name ping-pong came 11 years after the game was patented by Foster. It was registered in England by the same man who introduced the game "Gossima," John Jaques. Afterwhich he sold the US rights to the Parker Brothers. Another name that this game is known for is whiff-waff. This name was registered in England by Slazenger and Sons, and they claimed that whiff-waff was a different game than ping-pong, but their way of playing was very much the same.
One major turning point for the game as a whole was brought about by a man from England, James Gibb. Initially rubber and cork balls were used for the game and their bounce were too unpredictable. James Gibb introduced the use of celluloid balls, which he took with him from USA when he returned back to England. This made the game catapult to further popularity.
That summarizes the history of ping-pong. So in the debate on who really invented the concept of the game itself, no one knows as of yet. However, if we only go by the man who made a patent of the game, then the answer is David Foster. This sneak peek into the game's history may be a bit too lengthy considering that the sport is fairly new but given the widespread interest on the game, spanning continents, it is not surprising that table tennis has such a rich background.
