The typical aquarium of the average aquarist usually includes the following as its basic components: an active filtration system, a chiller or heater (whichever suits the intended habitat of the particular species being kept), a stand or cabinet, and artificial lights. Many fish aquarium tanks also have hoods. A hood has many uses : it minimizes water evaporation, it prevents fishes from getting out of the tank, and it prevents unwanted objects and organisms from getting in (such as cats that are curious to play or eat fish).
Typical aquariums have a three-way filtration system, i.e. it has chemical filtration, mechanical filtration, and biological filtration. The most common of these systems is the combination of mechanical and biological filtration systems. Some types of filters remove phosphate, while others convert ammonia into nitrate. The latter has an unfortunate effect of depriving plants in the aquarium, if there are any, of their needed nitrogen. And the filter medium usually harbors microorganisms that mediate in the nitrification process. Of all the components of aquariums, the filtration system is the most complicated.
Heaters of fish aquarium tanks usually include a thermostat which allows for the regulation of the water's temperature when the ambient temperature is lower than that desired in the water. Contrastingly , coolers and other suitable refrigeration equipment are used to lower the water temperature when the environmental temperature is higher than desired. Thermometers are used to monitor the proper water temperature. Various types of thermometers are suitable. Plastic strip types, glass alcohol types, and electronic thermometers have all been successfully utilized by hobbyists.
To provide water circulation and consequently facilitate the exchange of gas at the surface of the water, air pumps connected to air stones or decorations placed inside the tank are used to agitate the water. This prevents suffocation of the fish and at the same time help in eliminating noxious gases in the water.
Aquarium designs incorporate many necessary characteristics. These physical components include lighting; tank size; density and presence of plants, whether rooted or floating; presence of driftwood or bog; decorative overhangs and caves; substrate type; the amount of exposure of the tank to sunlight; as well as other factors. These components can and do affect the survival and behavior of the fish and plants in the tank.
Fish aquarium tanks are usually placed over aquarium stands. Decorative and plain metal stands are readily available. Custom stands can also be made. Most of these stands utilize polystyrene pads that cushion the glass tank, in order to prevent irregularities present on the stand as well as on the glass tank bottom. In some fish aquarium tanks, however, the tank comes with an under frame, making the pad redundant.
Aquarium stands must be adequately strong as well as level. Placing the aquarium on an otherwise weak or unleveled stand may cause distortion of the glass, leakage, or cracking. Tanks are also commonly installed into cabinets are even walls, and come in various styles to suit the room ambiance and dcor.
