The classic sound of stereo uses two audio channels independent from each other that serve to produce a deep and directional sound to the listener. The term "surround sound" means that the system uses multiple audio channels, creating a three dimensional and much more immersive sound. This is made possible with the strategic placement of several speakers around the home theater room. The Dolby 5.1 is a format that is classified as surround.
This has been familiar to moviegoers for decades. This time, however, it is also becoming the 'in' thing in home theaters, personal computers, and the gaming world. As such, companies in the entertainment industry are also increasingly formatting their audio products, such as music, videos, High Definition TV broadcasts, and video games in surround sound.
Formats of surround sound are quite dependent on multiple speakers. There are formats that utilize set ups with three speakers, seven speakers or more. The 5.1 format is the standard and most frequently used in home theater systems. This format uses three speakers at the front, two at the back, plus one low-frequency speaker.
However, there are other formats in the market as well. Competitor surround sound formats usually mimic the 5.1 format with small deviations, and many home theater systems allow its users to choose which surround sound format they want.
When it comes to power and energy in audio systems, the concept of the watt is important if one will shop for electronics. This is the unit that describes the output of energy of the amplifier that supplies the power to the system's speakers. The higher the wattage, the more power there is, and consequently, the more capacity in volume. This latter is measured in the unit called the decibel.
The wattage of a particular speaker and its receiver or amplifier's maximum output must be compatible with it. This must be kept in mind when choosing what product to buy in an online shop for electronics and home theater systems.
If the two are not compatible, and the speakers are too small to handle a large amount of power, then the sound may become distorted, resulting in bad audio output and may even cause speaker damage. Similarly, if the speaker capacity is way too high for the amplifier's capacity, the same bad results of sound distortion and speaker damage may also ensue.
The average layman will then naturally ask: "How much wattage is necessary for my purposes?" There is no fixed rule here. A general ballpark estimate would probably deem that small rooms will need 50 watts for every audio channel, while larger areas may need 100 watts. One's own comfortable listening experience will be the best judge for this. This of course also applies to hard metal music extremists who want aggressively loud sound even in small rooms.
Keep in mind too when scouring an online shop for electronics that wattage and decibel have an exponential and not linear ratio. Their ratio is 10:1 if the aim is to double the sound capacity. That is, one needs to increase the power (wattage) to the tenth power in order for an existing decibel volume level to double. If in doubt about all these, it is always best to consult professional assistance.
