It is easy to become overwhelmed with the number of choices that typically stock the local furniture and department stores, making it a challenge to decide what style to decorate your living room in. There are so many things to consider when buying furniture that it is easy to become confused and end up with pieces that don't exactly go well with the style you had originally intended, or with other pieces in the room. One technique that interior designers like to use is called "staging". Staging is a means of determining how living room furnishings go into the room so you can properly plan the space. Because you can gauge the number of pieces you need to buy to keep your living room from appearing too cluttered or bare, this technique is very effective. This also means it is easier to avoid buying pieces that are either too big or too small for the room.
If you are starting from scratch in a bare room, stage the area by determining where you want the furniture to go and marking these spots off. Things like painter's tape or ribbon can be used to mark off areas for your couch, end tables and coffee tables. Once you've done this, step back to the corner of the room and judge your layout from a distance. This will allow you to determine if adjustments need to be made, such as if there is enough floor space left over for people in the household to easily move around, or if the furniture arrangement is properly functional. You can also take this opportunity to maximize your corners by using pieces like modular sofas and corner entertainment centers. Most spaces will only allow for about 3 to 5 pieces of furniture, depending on the actual size of the room, of course.
When buying the actual furniture, avoid going for complicated designs and fabric patterns. You may also want to avoid large pieces that are too trendy if you are aiming for a more timeless design. Keep things neutral and use smaller pieces to create the focal points and accents instead. For example, if you have a large accent wall, you can buy a console table and place figurines on top to act as a focal point. Also, try to emphasize quality rather than quantity. A lot of homeowners make the mistake of making too many compromises just to be done with decorating the room as soon as possible. If you find that there are a few pieces to go, but you don't have enough left over from your budget, it is better to delay the purchase until you are able to buy the quality pieces you want.
