If you want to start coin collecting US coins, you should consider the other kinds of coins issued by the US Mint apart from the regularly circulating coins that you find in your pocket. The US Mint is the agency authorized by Congress to manufacture and distribute official US currency. The Mint produces coins in four facilities: Denver, Philadelphia, West Point, NY and San Francisco with coins carrying mint marks to indicate where they were minted. In addition, the US Mint produces other collectible numismatic products that are sold directly to collectors through its online store. Here is a brief breakdown of the various categories of these numismatic products.
Program coins. These are coins that are issued under the numismatic programs of the US Mint. In 2010, the Mint launched America the Beautiful Quarters program, a 56 quarter-dollar set that shows American national parks and other sites of interest on the reverse with a common obverse (front) featuring a 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. Other ongoing special programs include presidential $1 coins intended to honor the country s presidents and Native American $1 coins to celebrate the contributions of Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to US history.
Annual coin sets. These are specially-produced proof sets of regular-circulation coins that were released during the year. A proof is a specially struck coin made using highly polished planchets and which may be struck by the die more than once to more clearly highlight the design. The 2011 US Mint Proof set features all 14 circulating coins issued during the year in proof condition, including five American the Beautiful quarters, four Presidential one dollar coins and one Native American coin as well as proof versions of regularly circulating coins such as the Kennedy half-dollar and the Lincoln penny.
American Eagle Proof coins. These are specially designed bullion coins for coin collecting and are also used by investors as a way to add small amounts of gold, silver and platinum to their investment portfolios. Bullion coins are valued by their weight in a particular precious metal and are made from highly polished planchets (coin blanks) which are struck twice to bring out the fine details of the coin design. They are available as proof coins available in various weights and uncirculated coins intended for collectors which are sold in one ounce sizes
Commemorative coins. These are specially designed coins that are intended to mark important US persons, events and institutions. These are sold at above face value with the proceeds going to benefit institutions related to the subject of the coin. Commemorative coins produced in 2011 include Medal of Honor $5 gold coins and $1 silver coins and US Army $5 gold, $1 silver and half-dollar clad coins, with beneficiary organizations including the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and the Army Historical Foundation.
Those interested in getting into coin collecting through these sets can buy new releases from the US Mint; however, releases from past years are no longer sold by the Mint and can be bought from reputable coin dealers.
