Even though it is one of the most neglected areas in golf lessons, putting is still a very important area in golf that a player must strive to improve. In fact, it is not far-fetched to say that the putter is actually most important club in the game, with the driver only being the second most important. Sending out a driver at the start of the game is easy; just swing the ball with proper spin, posture, and aim and you'll be fine. But should take putting differently; the skills that it takes - accuracy and control - is far more difficult to handle than just sending the ball as far as you see fit.
The best of golf lessons approach driving and putting differently; driving starts by using your back to aim for the target, while in putting, the forearm and the club of the putter is used to aim for the ball. This is the first aspect that should be paid attention to when executing a putt. As always, your body should stand straight and your back must remain erect. Your shoulders should be well poised and use your forearms to aim for the center of the ball. Meanwhile, the club of the putter should cover the ball. You should not just tilt your body when looking for the proper positioning. You must walk forward or backward to get the proper aim in covering the ball.
Contrary to what some golf lessons would teach, instead of what you would do if you were executing a driver, your hands should now work in unison. Doing the opposite will result to unwanted inconsistencies and inaccuracies in your putt. Your arms should not be spread apart as this will increase the tendency of your hands to use the wrist in releasing the swing.
In order to properly aim for the target, you must strive to keep your head still; don't move it as you look at the target, just move your eyes. As you use your eyes to aim for the target, imagine a straight line that extends from the target towards the ball, then towards the club of the putter, then towards the midpoint between your wrists.
As you release the swing, only the shoulders and arms should be used. The wrists should be still because a slight movement on its part will cause a distortion on the intended movement of the ball. Again, unlike in sending out a drive there should be no weight transferring when swinging for a putt. Perfect balance is the key here. Remember, the body and the legs should not be used at all. They must be still and only the shoulders and arms must be used to release the putt.
