In golf lessons, there are so many basics; proper posture, proper swinging, proper timing, and of course, properly releasing the club. Of all those basic golf lessons, among others, learning how to properly release the club is perhaps the most basic of all basics. It is what makes golf what it is and while it is mostly neglected by many practitioners, the most competitive golf players make sure that they have this part of the game properly done. In fact, there are some players who realize that they have to learn this only once they get old, and you don't want to be one of them.

There is a considerable similarity between landing a punch in boxing and hitting ball in playing golf. Most players mistakenly aim only for the target instead of aiming through the target. The latter is the principle called the "follow through". By doing a "follow through" on the ball, the force to be released on the ball will be much greater than if it had only been targeted. A successful execution of this principle relies more on the psychology of the player than its physical execution. In order to successfully follow through a target ball, the player must not aim only at hitting the ball. Rather, he must think that he will only swing through the ball while aiming for something else that will be passed by the swing.

This technique might be very simple but its effect on the physical execution will be very significant. By thinking that you only swing through the ball, your grip will be much more relaxed and the force that you are exerting will flow freely along the ball, thereby transferring as much energy as you have exerted. Most players are unaware that whenever they set their mind in just hitting the ball, their hands actually begin to tense once the club approaches the ball and that prevents the release of greater force that will generate a powerful swing.

By following this simple mind trick, you are actually hacking a very simple but very difficult element that golf lessons would always teach you: to relax. Many beginners are actually having trouble with this because they don't know how they are supposed to relax when they are supposed to generate a lot of force.

Some players are still actually having difficulty in generating force despite setting their mind on hitting through the ball. These players needed to have a target. If you happen to be one of this players, one technique that you could use is to aim for the spot that is behind your shoulder before you swing the ball.
