Colored contact lenses let you change the color of your eyes to improve your appearance. Not everybody is satisfied with the eye color they were born with and colored lenses allow you to experience what you would look like with a different color. Apart from changing your eye color, these lenses also address vision problems such as nearsightedness and astigmatism although they are also available in Plano form (with no corrective power).
There are two main types of colored contact lenses.
Enhancement lenses. These lenses are not intended to change the natural color of your eye but rather enhance it by deepening the color or making it look more vibrant. This type of lens is ideal for those people who want to make slight but noticeable changes to their appearance.
Color changing lenses. These are darker tinted lenses that will give you a different eye color even you have naturally dark-colored eyes. The people who wear these want to have a visible change that people will comment on.
There are also special effects lenses that change the appearance of your iris for example, giving you cat s eyes. These are generally worn by users during parties or other special occasions.
Colored contacts work by having lines or dots of the desired color on the lens to mimic or change the iris as well as adding vibrancy. But the center part of the lens, which should lie over your pupil, is clear so that you can see through it. Unfortunately, colored lenses can sometimes create vision problems, such as when you blink and the lens shifts so that the clear part is no longer on top of the pupil, or if your pupil expands such that it is bigger than the clear part of the lens.
If you are planning to buy colored lenses, you will still have to get a prescription for them from your eye care provider even if you get Plano lenses. In the US, contact lenses cannot be sold without a prescription. In addition, the prescription will name a specific brand of lens and you can only buy this particular brand.
When first wearing colored contact lenses you will have to give yourself a few days for your eyes to get used to them. For the first few days, wear your lens for only a few hours a day. If you experience some irritation or itchiness, this is normal and will eventually go away. However, if these symptoms persist or you experience worse symptoms such as red eyes or foggy vision, you should take off your lens at once and see your eye care provider.
You should also take care of your colored lens the way you do the regular pair you wear daily. Make sure that you store them in a tightly sealed lens case when not in use submerged in lens solution. If you only wear your colored contact lenses infrequently, make sure that you change the solution in the case every month and clean and disinfect the lens properly before storing them again.
