Contact lenses are a popular method of vision correction that is a substitute to wearing eyeglasses. Many people choose contacts for aesthetic reasons, because they don t like the way they look with glasses. You can also wear tinted contacts that can change the color of your eyes. And once you get accustomed to them, they are very easy to put on and take off.
There are two main types of contact lenses which can be prescribed for you depending on the type of vision problem you have that needs to be corrected - rigid gas permeable and soft lenses.
Soft contacts are made of a flexible plastic that is as much as 80|water, and are comfortable to wear. However, their softness makes them more vulnerable to tearing as well as picking up dirt. There are two major kinds of soft lenses daily wear lenses that have to be removed daily and extended wear lenses that can be worn for longer periods and even when sleeping. Soft lenses are also divided into permanent lenses that can be worn for a year or more before having to be changed and disposable lenses that are worn for a certain period (a short as a day or as long as a month) and then thrown away and replaced with a fresh pair.
Rigid gas permeable, more commonly known as hard contacts, are less flexible lenses that may offer better correction in some cases by controlling the curvature of the cornea. Unlike soft contacts, hard contacts have an acclimation period during which they may feel uncomfortable until the eye gets used to them.
There are also specialized contact lenses that are used to correct specific vision problems, such as toric lenses for astigmatism that are made with special curvatures and bifocal lenses that have areas for reading and close vision as well as for distance vision.
Before you buy contact lenses you will have to get a prescription since poorly fitted lenses can cause discomfort and inflammation and, in some rare cases, permanent damage. So you must visit an eye care practitioner to be tested and fitted. Generally, lens prescriptions are applicable for a year although some states may have different regulations. Once the prescription expires, you will have to be retested by your eye care provider for an new prescription. You can buy your lenses from these providers or have the option of shopping for them at different outlets such as drug stores, optical specialty outlets and even warehouse clubs. One thing to note is that prescriptions are also required to specify a particular brand of lens and you can only buy that brand. However, if the provider names a private-label brand, you may have the option to substitute an equivalent brand.
Once you buy your lenses, you should follow your eye care providers directions as to how they should be worn and maintained. If you buy disposable contact lenses, the brand will provide you with a disposal schedule to follow although you should always follow the advice of your provider.
