Purpose of Public Speaking, in Consonance with the Speech Itself

What makes a great speaker? Do the people in politics make good speakers? Do activists make good speakers? Do academic people make good speakers? Do those with good communication skills make good speakers? Can those who are illiterate make a good speaker? Is education a requisite to become a good speaker? Is appearance important?

These things mentioned above can contribute to a good speech. But taking one and saying it is what makes a good speaker is a misleading statement. Public speaking to be successful depends on many things. For a speaker to be good, there are also a number of factors to consider.

One of the factors to consider in public speaking is the purpose. The purpose of one's speech is the most vital part of it. It is what defines everything else. What is the speaker's purpose? Is it to send an informative message like when the President of the United States is informing its citizens of the country's current economic states? Is it to convince a group of people to fight some kind of a tyranny that has been oppressing the people for so long a time? Is it to influence the emotion of the people like when the head of the church sends message of love and hope to a congregation during Christmas time?

There are many possible purposes for public speaking and these purposes must first be determined before one engages himself to create a speech, because the essence of the same is in the purpose more than anything else.

In the first abovementioned example, the purpose of the President's speech is to inform the people of the current economic status of the country. In public speaking for such purpose, the president can not afford to give partially true figures, statistics or status. He has to be honest because what he is giving is information. He has to have the accurate data in his speech and he must relay this to his listeners in an accurate and straight-forward way.

In the second example above, the leftist trying to convince the people to take up their arms and fight a tyrannical government must be able to deliver his speech with authority and passion. He must have these two things because he needs people to believe in him. He is asking the people to go out of their comfort zones, risk their lives and/or liberty and fight a great power. Thus, such speech must be convincing, powerful and filled with authority.

If the purpose of one's public speaking is to influence people's emotion like that of a priest during a service speaking before a congregation, the former must have moral ascendancy and must deliver his speech gently and with love, as what is being conveyed it to promote love and hope to everyone.

These are but few reasons for creating a speech and these reasons must be in consonance with the tone and language of the speech itself.
