There are several notebook computers types available on the market that you need to familiarize yourself with when choosing one that is right for your needs. These types are essentially classified on the basis of screen size although they may be distinguished in other ways such as the features they have or don t have. Here is a quick look at the different notebook types you can encounter when you go shopping.
Netbooks. These are generally defined as those notebooks having seven to twelve-inch screens. They are the ideal devices for students and businessmen who want a notebook for use in classes or business meetings since they weigh around three pounds but still have all the essential functions of a PC. However, they are generally useful only for simple productivity functions such as word processing and spreadsheets but not for watching streaming videos or playing games since they use single-core processors. Netbooks also usually don t have an optical drive so you can t use them to burn CDs or play DVDs, although some models allow you to attach an optical drive as an external unit. On the plus side, however, they are very affordable and battery life is longer than with other notebook types, around six hours or more on a single charge.,
Ultraportables. These are bigger notebook computers with screens of around 11-inches to 14-inches that are also more powerful than netbooks, since they use dual-core processors. Many people prefer these notebooks over netbook computers since they have larger keyboards and easier-to-read displays. However, they will weigh a little more than netbooks, and optical drives are also not a regular feature in most ultraportables. And battery life on a single charge is around four to six hours.
Midsize or All-Purpose. This is a catch-all category of notebook computers that feature the traditional fifteen-inch screens, although screen sizes can vary from 14-inches to 16-inches. They have dual-core processors and 4GB of RAM with the option to upgrade to as much as 8GB. However, they weigh around five to eight pounds, which may make lugging them around a little harder. But these computers contain nearly all the standard features you can find in a desktop, including optical drives and as much as 1TB of hard disc drive space. Of course, battery life is shorter with notebooks due to the more powerful processors and you can expect around 2 to 5 hours on a single charge.
Desktop Replacements. These are netbooks that have all the features of a desktop PC but are still transportable enough to be moved from room to room. Display sizes range from sixteen to eighteen inches and these notebooks typically run on dual-core processors as well as having discrete video cards that allow you to watch movies or play games on the notebook. Of course, since they consume as much power as a regular PC, these notebook computers have a very short battery life of around two hours or less which is why they are typically run off a regular power outlet and weigh around eight to twelve pounds.
