In this article, the different types of microdermabrasion will be discussed. You have the crystal version and the diamond tipped mode.
For the crystal one, this version uses a wand that shoots out fine aluminum oxide crystals on the skin in order for the skin to be exfoliated as gently as possible. While this is happening, the wand also has a vacuum to pull away the dead skin cells that are sloughed off and the excess crystals used in the process. The reason why this type is losing popularity is because there are debates going on in the medical world where dermatologists are arguing about the safety of using aluminum oxide crystals. Thus, this is leading to the slow phase out of this type of tool.
Another technology in microdermabrasion is the technique that uses a diamond tipped wand. With this technology, even those areas close to the mouth and eyes can now be abraded with precision without the risk that the crystals had if used near delicate areas.
In terms of results though, the two techniques are the same. However, the diamond peel may be a lesser uncomfortable compared to the crystal one. Aside from that, they are essentially the same, it feels like being licked by a cat with thick bristles for its tongue. In terms of side effects, the same is true for both techniques, which is hypersensitivity to sun and a tight feeling on the whole treated area.
But aside from these two types, it would also be best to talk about another important category of this procedure, which is the home versus professional microdermabrasion.
If one will do this procedure personally, one will use a special topical cream and a foam-like applicator that comes with the kit, instead of the wand tool. These home kits should not cause any redness or soreness as these usually have calming ingredients. The only problem with doing this is that you will not have the same level of dermabrasion and precision compared to the professional one and of course the results are short lived as one is doing a personal abrasion without any proper training.
A professional service on the other hand, is done in a sterile environment in a day spa or a clinic. The tools used by a professional technician that handles this type of facial treatments are more aggressive compared to the home kits but professional skill and precision are both needed to use these equipment. The only downside really for a professional version is that it costs a lot to have this done by a dermatologist or a doctor or your favored esthetician. And, that does not even include gratuity.
Bottom line, whichever type should one chooses, thorough research will need to be done. After all, each session is not for those with cheap wallets so one has to make sure he or she gets the most of the microdermabrasion session that one availed.
