Basic Guitar Lessons - Parts of a Guitar

Article Category: Arts and Crafts

Author Name: chickie maxwell

One of the most basic guitar lessons presented to beginners is distinguishing the different parts of a guitar. This is incorporated even in lessons that are accessible for free on the Internet. Learning the different parts of a guitar will also help in the future when guitarists need to upgrade their instruments or have it repaired.

Basic Parts

There are a lot of different types of guitars out there such as classical guitars, bass guitars, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and electric-acoustic guitars among others. Although there may be many different kinds of guitars sold in stores, they all have pretty much very common basic parts. At the onset, knowing what these parts are will be what beginners will need. They will have to learn about the rest as needed.

Most guitar lessons will include a discussion about the following parts. It usually begins with the parts included in the headstock as follows:

Headstock: If a guitar is made to stand upright the headstock will be the top most part of the instrument. It's the one with all those strange looking pegs where the strings are attached. The headstock is also where one will find the label or brand of the guitar. Attached to the headstock are pegs, also known as machine heads.

Machine Heads: Machine heads are also known as tuning pegs. Each string of the guitar is attached to a designated machine head. To adjust the tune of each string, a guitarist will have to turn the tuning pegs and get the right tune for each string. The machine heads are usually screwed onto the headstock.

Nut: This is the short length of plastic located in the part where the headstock meets the neck. The nut has grooves for each of the guitar's strings.

Neck: Then of a guitar is the length of a board that connects the headstock to the body of the guitar. This stretch of board is also known as the fretboard. This is where most of the work a guitarist will be done. A close examination of this part of the guitar will reveal other important parts that every beginner guitarist should know.

The long stretch of the neck is lined with frets, which are the metallic strips that divide the neck into several sections. Now, a small point must be made clear regarding guitarist lingo. The metal strips on the neck are called frets and the spaces in between the said metal strips are also called frets. Others will just have to deduce which one is being referred to.

Usually, when the guitar lessons refer to the music then the term "fret" actually refers to the space in between the metal strips. However, if the topic of the lesson has nothing to do with the actual music being played, like repairing a guitar for instance, then

Body: This is the largest part of the entire instrument and usually has a sound hole on it if it's an acoustic guitar or a set of pick ups if it's an electric guitar. The part of the body where the strings are attached to is called the bridge. These are the parts of the guitar that beginner guitar lessons usually teach.
