Beginner guitar lessons form the foundation of any future guitar greats in history. Those who either don't have the time for formal instructions or just can't afford the fees charged by guitar coaches can opt to use free lessons from the Internet. Some lessons are downloadable while others incorporate videos and other materials to aid beginners in their first few steps.
It should be noted that there is no need to rush things when one learns by himself. This is also one of the benefits of online study since students don't really have to follow a rigid schedule. However, students should take time to digest the lessons and allow their hands to remember where they should go on the guitar's fretboard and strings. At the most, it might take a full seven days of repetition and practice before each beginner lesson is mastered.
First Steps
For the very first guitar lessons, beginners will need a guitar of their own, of course. It can be any guitar - acoustic steel stringed, classical guitar with nylon strings, or even an electric guitar. Since students will be dealing with beginner lessons they should hold back their desires to play bass guitar for now in case they want to learn how to play bass sections of different songs.
Other than a guitar, students will also need a medium guitar gauge pick. They should also find a comfortable chair that has no arms on it. Some may want to have a print out of the actual lessons although some students would rather have the lessons in video format. Finally, students should pack a little extra patience since it will take some time to pick up on the very first lessons of guitar playing.
The very first few guitar lessons usually involve learning the parts of a guitar. Beginners should become familiar with various parts such as machine heads, frets, nuts, fretboard, bridge, sound holes (acoustic guitars), pickups (electric guitars), bridge, strap pins, head stock, fret inlays, and many others.
The other lessons also include some of the fundamentals such as how to properly string a guitar and how to get the strings in tune. Students should learn how to choose the appropriate type of guitar strings for the particular guitar they are using. Acoustic steel strings will make a terrible match for a Spanish guitar that requires a set of nylon strings. The same is true if one uses plain steel strings for an electric guitar.
Other than knowing how to replace guitar strings, one of the most important beginner guitar lessons is getting the strings in tune. There are several ways to tune a guitar - some use a guitar tuner or a guitar tuning software, others prefer to use tuning forks. On the other hand, others who are good at playing by ear would either use another instrument, like a piano for instance, to tune their guitars or listen to a song that is in standard tune. Students will usually be taught how to tune their guitars in standard tune - E, A, D, G, B, E. Other tuning conventions like half step down, full step down, drop D, open C minor, drop C, will usually be discussed in later guitar lessons.
