Like humans, machines that function on system memory also suffer from memory loss. Among those which may be affected are laser printers. All models of laser printer since the mid-1990s are manufactured and shipped with what the designers believe are enough memory. The built-in memory capacity should allow the printers to print text documents with some scalable Windows TrueType typefaces without any problems. It should always remembered, however, that lasers are page printers, and text, fonts, and graphics inputted on each page use up printer memory.
The memory capacity of laser printers is generally a factor on the success with which memory-intensive files may be printed. It should be easily observable that printing files with the same number of pages do not necessarily take the same amount of time to complete . Typically, files with purely textual content print rather more quickly than a file of the same number of pages that contains both text and graphics. Graphics, particularly, photographs require larger printer memory. Problems usually crop up when a big file is put up for printing and the file requires more memory than the capacity of the laser printer.
Graphics with very high resolution require a large memory capacity. Once such a memory-intensive file is sent to the printer with lesser memory capacity, the printer endeavors to print the page until its memory runs out. The printer then stops and either shows error message or flickers error status lights. When this is the scenario, the user has no option but to eject the face manually using the eject button as long as the paper is not jammed. The ejected paper then shows that only a part of the page is printed.
Newer models of laser printers are usually equipped with built-in techniques to compress large files so that the printer memory can accommodate large files, as long as the difference between the printer memory capacity and the file or page memory requirement is not extremely large. It should, however, be understood by the user that when a page or file is compressed, the printing process is affected since data compression slows down the printing speed of laser printers. Moreover, compression procedures can not always be depended upon if the file memory size is extremely large compared to that of the printer memory.
The issue may, however, be handled prior to printing if the user is familiar with the memory capacity of the printer. One approach is to lower the resolution of the graphics contained in the file. The good news is that, when graphics resolution is reduced, the text resolution remains the same. In which case, as long as the document in question is not designed for reproduction, the text quality will still be of acceptable quality. Users should also be wary about reducing graphic resolution to less than 300 dots per inch as the quality will suffer beyond this point.
Other possible ways of addressing printer memory issues is by reducing the size of the graphic or transforming color graphics to black and white or sepia. Another approach to the problem is working it out on the side of the printer. Experts recommend adding random access memory (RAM) to laser printers if majority of printing jobs are expected to be memory intensive. If adding RAM is the solution of choice, it is advised that the procedure is handled by an authorized technician, especially if the laser printer is still protected by warranty.
