More than a decade ago, choosing between a laser printer and an inkjet printer would be ridiculously easy. If it is for office use and price is not an issue, lasers overwhelmingly get the nod . However, one need not compare the pros and cons when deciding to buy one for home use. The main factor then would have been just the price, since more than a decade ago, laser printers were generally too expensive. At the present time, however, where cost does not anymore present significant weak point against buying laser printers, competition has stiffened between lasers and inkjets.
A laser printer is heat-enabled, whereas an inkjet printer, as the name suggests, shoots ink to paper. While both types of printer can produce hard copies of text documents, photographs, artwork, and other kinds of manuscript, there are crucial benefits of using a laser printer:
Speed. A laser printer can definitely print more pages than an analogous inkjet can. On the average, a laser printer produces from 12 to 40 printed pages in a minute, while inkjets can only deliver from 8 to 20 pages within one minute.
Output quality. There is no comparison between the two types of printer with respect to the quality of prints. Laser output will always present best quality text and images even when weighed against the most expensive inkjet. In fact, only laser printers can turn out the crispiest and blackest black texts or line graphics.
Lower consumable cost. While black toner cartridges cost higher than blank inkjet cartridges, the toner lasts longer than the ink cartridges. Hence, over time, one laser toner cartridge will print substantially more pages than several inkjet cartridges combined for the same cost as the toner. Moreover, since toner cartridges can now be refilled, more savings can be realized from laser consumables than with the inkjet.
Smear-free output. Smearing is driven by process involved in the printer operation. The fact that laser printers bond the dry toner powder to the paper means that the printed output is not exposed to liquid which will cause smearing. On the other hand, since inkjets use ink, the print may be discolored by smears when the paper gets wet.
Less noise when in operation. A laser printer operates quieter than the low-end inkjet printers. This is always an issue whether the printer is being used in the office or at home. Employees can focus more on their jobs in quieter surroundings and hence, ensure at least average productivity . For personal use, a quieter printer operation preserves the serene atmosphere of the home.
As a general rule, when the best quality black output is required, laser printers are the equipment of choice. Whether used at home or in an office of any size, lasers will always be more efficient than inkjets. It will, however, be an entirely different story for color output requirements.
