There is nothing worse than thinking that you will be able to hide during a hot summer day in your cool air conditioned house only to find that your air conditioning unit isn't working. Don't immediately jump on the phone and start calling local repair people who know how to fix A/C units. First you should take a look at the situation and make sure that there isn't a really simple solution.

Is your thermostat set properly? It doesn't take much to change the temp, just a shoulder brushing against the thermostat, and your air conditioning won't kick on. If the problem isn't the thermostat, you should make sure that the air conditioner's coils aren't frosted over. The hotter the day is, the harder you air conditioner has to work, and this can cause it to build thick layer of frost and stop working. The quickest way to solve this problem is shutting the unit off and letting the frost melt. This is a great opportunity to clean out your unit, top off the coolant, and to replace the filter.

The final two things that you want to look at are the pilot light and the circuit breaker. Sometimes these get tripped for no apparent reason and need to be reset. If none of these things are the problem you are going to have to accept that you are in need of a person who can fix A/C units.

It doesn't matter how good you are about making sure that you have properly maintained your air conditioner, things wear out and parts are going to need to be replaced. Even if you have a knack for home repair projects, when your air conditioner really needs to be fixed, you should hire a contractor to do the work for you, they will be able to get the necessary parts and get them installed faster than you'll be able to. By utilizing the services of an experienced contractor and having them fix A/C unit, you won't be running the risk of something else getting damaged as one part get replaced.

Just because you aren't going to be doing the repairs yourself, it doesn't mean that there is nothing you can do before hand to keep the damage minimal and make sure that your contractor can get started on the fix A/C project right away.

If at all possible, shut off your air conditioning unit completely. Even if it is still blowing cold air, you are going to want to shut it down. Continuing to run it will increase the damage and could ruin the air conditioning unit altogether. There is even a chance that the faulty part could lead to a fire. It is better to have the unit shut down and try cooling your home with fans than to start a house fire.
