AC units come in several different forms. The prices can vary widely, depending on the type, size and brand of AC unit chosen. Choosing a system can be a daunting task and it can be easy to spend too much money. Several things need to be considered in purchasing a new AC unit.
One of the first things to consider is the type of new AC unit needed. Some houses have AC already installed and purchase of a new system can be incredibly expensive.
Depending on the size of the home, the presence of ductwork or pipe work and the ease of installation, the average prices for a AC unit can cost anywhere from $1850.00 for a standard efficiency gas system to $18,500 for a geothermal heating and cooling system.
A new AC unit that also includes heat, and comprised of geothermal components is the most expensive option short-term, but can provide huge energy savings over the life of the system. Piping is run into the ground near the house to a depth low enough where a constant temperature is maintained and the coolant is then pumped back into the house for heating and cooling purposes. These systems are clean, quiet and very efficient and can save up to 70 percent on heating and cooling costs during a year. Coupled with a passive solar energy system, these new AC units with heat can drop energy costs even lower.
Conducting maintenance prevents both costly repairs and increases the efficiency of your system. There are a few basic steps that any homeowner can do to help performance.
One of the first things to do (and one of the easiest) is to replace AC unit filters on a regular basis. The recommendation for most homes is once a month for both systems, but it might be wise to consider replacing them more frequently if you have pets or live in a dusty environment.
Replacing AC unit filters is inexpensive and the filters can be found in any home improvement store, big box store, or even grocery store. They range in price from under $2.00 for a basic filter, to up to $20.00 per filter for one of the HEPA filters. As filters age on a working AC unit, they fill with dust and dirt, which impedes air flow. This in turn causes the system to work harder to heat or cool the home. Dirty filters can also increase the amount of allergens in a home causing breathing or allergy problems.
Another easy to do maintenance step is checking the water drain on the AC unit. Drains should be inspected to ensure that they are draining properly and the water is hooked up to drain outside of the house or away from foundations. If there are problems with this drain, it is a good idea to call a professional in to repair it as in the long run it will save you money on more expensive flooring or foundation repairs.
The last easy step that a homeowner can do to maintain an AC unit is to clean the condenser coil of the system. It is important to keep it free of dust, dirt, or leaves to allow the system to work at peak efficiency. Cleaning it is relatively simple-outside systems need to be blown out and washed down with a plain soap and water solution after making sure the unit is not powered on. The only other thing that is needed is a hose to rinse it off. It is not advised to do this with a power washer as the condenser or its parts could be damaged. For inside systems a soft cloth with a soap and water solution is all that is needed. Doing preventative maintenance will keep your new AC unit working well and operating at peak efficiency for many years to come
