When a product is made from timber to be used as a form of flooring it is considered to be hardwood. Bamboo also falls within hardwood flooring categories even though it is made from grass rather than timber. Planks of solid wood are milled from a single piece of timber and range in many dimensions and styles as they are turned into hardwood flooring. Solid wood used for hardwood flooring has natural characteristics that are appealing in a home. There is no certain wood type that can be used for hardwood flooring that will hold up in every environment. Hardwood flooring is composed of two layers that in the end make a plank.
The top layer of the wood is the wood that is visible to the eye and the most durable to handle foot traffic and the weight of furniture. There is a difference between the use of solid wood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl and veneer. Hardwood flooring is the most expensive among those categories. Engineered wood floors are usually pre-finished compared to installing natural wood flooring that may need to be stained. Hardwood flooring is prone but not limited to the following happening: gapping, crowning and cupping. Solid wood that is used for hardwood flooring is able to be cut in the following styles: flat-sawn, quarter-sawn and rift-sawn. Quarter-sawn and rift-sawn will have the same appearance when the hardwood flooring installation is completed.
When using solid wood for hardwood flooring, many come with absorption strips that run the length of each plank to reduce the risk of cupping. When wanting to use hardwood flooring it is important to stay away from the following terms because they are not true hardwood materials: wood ply construction, finger core construction, fibreboard and engineered flooring. There are many installation systems when thinking about hardwood flooring. They include but are not limited to: tongue-and-groove, click systems, floor connection system and the glue down method. Other wood manufacturing styles include rotary peel, which is treating the wood that will be used by boiling the log. Sliced peel is another style where the wood is sliced creating disc shaped veneers. The third style is dry solid sawn where the logs are not boiled but kept at a low humidity level.
Oil and polyurethane are the two most common finishes for hardwood flooring. They have very different refinishing and maintenance regimes. Lacquers, varnishes and waxes have been used in the past to refinish hardwood flooring. Oiling floors is another method that has been used for thousands of years. Using a steel brush to open of the grain and then applying oil is another method as well as using polyurethane. Sanding hardwood floors will make them very smooth and prepare them to be refinished.
