Next, clear a space on top of the counter and measure from the wall to the edge of the counter. Make sure the measurement is taken in a straight line and write it down. You will also want to measure the length of the counter along the back wall. This is called the back edge of the countertop. Put the measuring tape on one side and measure all of the back edges and write them down.

Once you have all of the measurements written down, add them up into linear footage calculations. These numbers will help you understand how much square footage of material you will need for your counters replacement. As you shop for materials, you will then have a better understanding of what the total cost of the materials will be if it costs $20 per square foot.

Your measurements will give you an idea of how much counter space you currently have available in your kitchen. If you want to add space by creating an island or extending an existing counter, you will want to add some square footage onto the countertop space you measured in order to understand the costs as you begin to look at materials.
