If your kitchen looks as old as it is, it might be time to think about remodeling the room. Making changes in your kitchen can raise the overall value of your home. It can also make the space more functional, inviting, and beautiful. When people think about remodeling their kitchens, their minds may automatically move to the countertops. Countertops are one of the largest spaces in the kitchen, next to the walls and floors. They attract a lot of attention and play an important role in the function of the room. Before you go about purchasing new materials for the counters replacement process, you will want to take accurate measurements of the countertop space so you can price the new materials. Understanding your measurements will allow you to find materials that fit your budget and it will also help you realize what may and what may not work in the space you have available.
If you already have cabinets in place and you plan to keep them, measure the depth of these cabinets underneath the countertop. Put the measuring tape under the countertop while the cabinets are open. Most cabinets are standard at 30, 21, or 18 inches of depth. Measure from the back of the cabinet to the outside edge and write that measurement down.
Next, clear a space on top of the counter and measure from the wall to the edge of the counter. Make sure the measurement is taken in a straight line and write it down. You will also want to measure the length of the counter along the back wall. This is called the back edge of the countertop. Put the measuring tape on one side and measure all of the back edges and write them down.
Once you have all of the measurements written down, add them up into linear footage calculations. These numbers will help you understand how much square footage of material you will need for your counters replacement. As you shop for materials, you will then have a better understanding of what the total cost of the materials will be if it costs $20 per square foot.
Your measurements will give you an idea of how much counter space you currently have available in your kitchen. If you want to add space by creating an island or extending an existing counter, you will want to add some square footage onto the countertop space you measured in order to understand the costs as you begin to look at materials. It is also a good idea to have the professionals take measurements of their own before you finalize any orders. If you measure incorrectly and order on your measurements, you will have to pay for any mistakes.
