When remodeling the kitchen many homeowners choose refacing cabinet doors over replacing the cabinets altogether for a couple of different reasons. The first reason might be cost since budget determines a lot when it comes to any project. But when you consider the role the kitchen plays in the home, convenience is big consideration. Especially if the family will stay in the home during the remodeling process, the convenience of refacing cabinet doors might be even more important than the cost involved.
Depending on the size of the kitchen and the extent of the underlying structure to be revamped, most jobs take from two to four days whereas a full kitchen cabinet replacement might take two to four weeks. That's a lot of take out food and no kitchen sink to endure. But once the job of measurements and picking out the new look has been done, the experienced cabinet refacer will come in and do the work fairly quickly in most cases.
The contractor will begin by removing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts and preparing the surface to receive the new finish. If lead based paint is present, the contractor is required by law to take extra precautions and to advise the homeowners of the situation. This can, of course, add time to the job. Once the surface is ready, either thru sanding or another method, the refacing of cabinet doors can really get under way with the application of the adhesive or in some cases the refacing material is nailed in place.
There are basically three different material that the homeowner can choose from when refacing cabinet doors. Plastic laminate offers a wide variety of colors and is usually the least expensive option. RTF (rigid thermofoils) accommodates more door styles and works well for many of the wood-grain looks. Wood veneer is at the upper end of the scale and can really make refacing cabinet doors a more affordable upgrade to the kitchen than custom wood cabinetry and still make the job look like a high-end remodel.
After the door fronts, drawer fronts, and exposed cabinet facing is redone, seams are finished and the underside of the upper cabinets are matched to the fronts and a new toekick is installed. Finishing the job will also include new hardware for the cabinetry in most cases and depending on what the homeowner wants, new countertops and flooring might also be handled by the same contractor who does the refacing of cabinet doors.
A professional chosen wisely can make a kitchen look like new without a major disruption in the lives of the homeowner's family. If at all possible, go beyond the word of mouth recommendations and see previous jobs for yourself and, by all means, find out how long the job took. If convenience is the goal as much as refacing the cabinet doors, make sure your contractor will deliver on both fronts.
