Refacing is a more economical solution to remodeling cabinets because only the face is being replaced and the body remains intact and replacing only the facing is less costly. Cabinet faces come in varied finishes, such as veneers or laminates. Veneers are available in either real wood or realistic wood like finishes. The real wooden veneers which are made from solid and durable woods which come as finished or unfinished. The most popular types of woods used in these veneers are Maple, Cherry wood, Oak, Ash, Red Oak and Hickory. These veneers are constructed particularly for the purpose of cabinet refacing and come pre-glued with pressure sensitive adhesives that make for quick and easy installation. The wood like veneers is designed to look as realistic as possible for that real wood look.

Refacing laminates or Thermofoil laminates are made out of polyvinyl chloride or PVC plastic; this is then attached to medium density fiberboard, which is wood shavings that are pressed together. These laminates are found to be both sturdy and resistant to dings and deep scratches unlike the wood veneers. They come in a variety of finishes like matte, granular or glossy. As for pricing, laminates are plastic and therefore are found to be cheaper in price. Currently there are also laminates that are made from recycled materials for the eco friendly redecorator.

While it may be cheaper to reface cabinets on your own a refinishing company will provide a beautiful job without you doing the work.
