Organic gardening pertains to using vegetable or animal fertilizers and other growth supports in place for chemical fertilizers. Even insecticides or pesticides are avoided and instead, they make use of natural pest control, wherein they use natural products to keep away insects rather than spraying the whole garden with chemicals.
However, growing plants organically is more than just using natural products. It is a philosophy that emphasizes improving the natural health of the ground, selecting suitable plants to your location and working in tune with nature in order to produce a productive and healthy harvest.
Although gardening without the assistance of chemicals is "in" now, organic gardening has been practiced since during ancient times. Before, there was no other way to farm. Synthetic fertilizers weren't even there until in the 1840s, when someone wearing a lab coat found out that he can make plants grow more rapidly with the help of some chemicals. Starting then, farming has become more and more chemical based. But, as early as 60 years ago, a person in the name of J.I. Rodale encouraged the use of organic pesticides and fertilizers in order to prevent damage to the environment.
Deciding to grow products organically is a no-brainer. Other ways to manage a garden go around killing most other plants, animals, insects and even Mother Earth. Chemical based farming kicks nature off-balance and then tries to revive her by adding more chemicals. This is evidently not a good way to grow plants.
Synthetic fertilizers won't improve the soil's structure. As a matter of fact, since they are made up of highly concentrated mineral salts, they can kill plenty of soil organisms which are responsible for soil formation and decomposition. When these chemicals are used repeatedly, the soil then loses its microbiotic activity and organic matter. As the material is expended, the soil then becomes lifeless, breaks down and becomes less able to hold nutrients and water. Because of this, a gardener has to use increasing amounts of fertilizers.
Synthetic insecticides are not selective and can kill a huge number of insects as well as the good ones. The situation created by chemical insecticides frequently allow other insects (not the first pest but other pests looking for food) to quickly increase in population since there are no natural enemies to hinder their population growth. In some cases, having these secondary pests can cause more damage than insects that were thought to be the problem initially.
Organic fertilizers on the other hand, vary from chemicals in a way that they nourish the plants and at the same time building the structure of the soil. Soils with plenty of organic matter stay loose and airy and are able to hold more nutrients plus moisture and enhance the growth of soil organisms such as earthworms and enhance healthier development of the plant's roots. Building a soil and making it healthy is very important in organic gardening.
