Newspaper archives have long been a credible resource for historical information for a researcher. Prior to the introduction of computers and the rise of the Internet, newspapers were considered as one of the most common source of news. As a matter of fact, newspapers were one of the components of the tri-media concept, the other two being television and radio.
In the United States alone, there are more than a thousand newspaper companies providing the American public with news of current events, as well as articles of interest. Everyday, thousands of newspapers are printed, sorted, folded, bound, delivered, sold, bought, and read. People from all walks of life can be seen reading the papers at home, on the way to work, at the workplace, and in the streets, to name a few. Ubiquitous as it is, articles written on newspapers are often as useful as they are timely. Once a news article stops being current, it becomes part of history.
After having lived its perceived usefulness, most of yesterday's newspapers end up in the trash, under bird cages and litter boxes, and the recycling center. What started out as an effective tool for the dissemination of information is instantly transformed into just a bunch of paper sheets folded together. But that only applies to the paper, how about the information in it? Is it also lost to oblivion?
Fortunately, the answer is no. Unlike paper that becomes discolored and brittle after a few years, information survives as long as it is recorded and transferred into a form that allows it to exist indefinitely. Throughout the years, efforts have been initiated to preserve newspaper issues for the next generations. Initiatives have gained a significant degree of success with the introduction of microforming technology.
Microforming
Microforming has been the mainstay of document preservation for years. The process involves reproducing and compressing the information contained in a document and transferring the results into film. The most common product of microforming is the microfilm and microfiche. Large libraries with deteriorating collections of old newspapers have found the technology instrumental in their preservation efforts. These advancements allowed newspaper archives to be set up.
Early newspaper archives have used microfilm and microfiche to store old newspaper issues. Since the images are too small for the naked eye to read, special readers are required. Reading devices have a translucent screen where the projected image in the microfilm or microfiche is displayed. Portable versions have also been developed which can project the image on a reflective screen, similar to modern projectors.
Newspaper archives go digital
Though initially a success, microfilms deteriorate over time. Hence, new technologies are required which will allow the information stored in these precious films to be preserved in a more stable and durable form. Fortunately, modern technological advances in imaging have made digital conversion possible. With the use of powerful optical scanners, these important pieces of history can be preserved and reproduced with amazing quality and clarity.
The digital age has succeeded in preserving millions of pages of history. As a result, newspaper archives are now available even on the Internet. Present and future researchers are now ensured that these valuable pieces of history will be around for generations to come.
