The newspaper is an indispensable daily feature of an American home. A living room or a reading room can not be complete without one. At the end of the day, however, the newspaper would have consumed its useful life. The newspaper is, however, one commodity which may not be fit into the framework of an economic life or the amount of time for which an item is able to provide benefits to its owner. Three facts offer support for such frame of thinking: first, today's current events is tomorrow's history; second paper can be reused; and third, newspapers can be archived .
If you are a fan of detective stories or crime fiction, you would have watched a number of scenes where the main protagonist browses a series of microfilm data in the newspaper archives of a local newspaper. The villain is thus, revealed and the climax builds up. Newspaper archives are, however, worth more than just props in a movie set. The historical value of the information printed in a newspaper renders the latter more important after it has served its purpose beyond its one-day expiration limit. Depending on the date stamped on a newspaper, it may be very recent history, recent history, modern history, or ancient history.
Preserving newspapers and other precious documents is now a thriving business. Some sectors have even elevated the microfilm as one significant step in spreading the printed word, obscured in magnitude only by Gutenberg's movable-type printing press during the fifteenth century. While microfilm is a rather old archiving technology, it was considered a very useful medium because it is compact and the duplication it provided is permanent . Most importantly, the microfilm came at a time when it is the only feasible method for safeguarding fading and brittle newspapers and historical relics in print.
To date, browsing of newspaper archives are a staple among researchers working on historical ethnography and political history. While the archiving material nowadays are not anymore as crude, as inconvenient and as hard to read as microfilm, it was this unsophisticated technology which awakened the realms of man's imagination to create and innovate . Such was the case for the tiny mirofiche and the more recent digitization technology. Newspaper archives have also become useful in solving crimes, tracing one's genealogic lineage, or simply for satisfying one's curiosity.
Despite digitization threatening on the horizon, preservation using microfilming technology continues to be a well-accepted procedure for archiving. This should not, however, take anyone by surprise . Microfilming has been around since the 1940s and its use is being policed by well-crafted national standards. Hence, as long as creation and storage of preserved documents follow the standards, the medium can preserve not just newspapers and historical documents but the national heritage, as well.
Today's news is tomorrow's history. Newspaper archives serve as our windows to the past. It is always an exhilarating feeling that despite all the recycling efforts to convert waste into economic gain, man is not relegating history into oblivion.
