There are a lot of scammers out there looking for a perfect victim. Another new scam going on has something to do with government grants. At times, an ad is placed saying that you are eligible to have a free grant to pay for tuition fees, have a home repair, help pay hospital bills or start a small business. Sometimes, it is a phone call from an alleged government agency that says that your grant has been approved and that you don't have to pay anything.
However, the country's consumer protection agency the Federal Trade Commission, says that free money is usually a scam, wherever you obtained the information from. Some artists place ads in papers while some will really call you and may ask you about some information about yourself in order to check if you are qualified for a federal grant.
Good scammers usually follow the same procedures. They will say you are qualified for government grants and ask for a one-time processing fee. They will even inform you about a money back guarantee but in fat, you will never use the grant that they are talking about. They will just vanish with your money.
Here are some tips from the FTC which can help you determine which are scams and which are not.
Never give your credit card information to anyone you don't know. Scammers frequently need this information in order to steal money from your account or use it for their own purchases without you knowing it. Credit card information is private and you shouldn't share it to anyone you are not familiar with.
Never pay anything for a "free" grant. Free means you don't have to spend anything. A true government agency will not ask you to pay for processing fees or grants that were already given to you.
Look-alikes are not really real. It doesn't mean that when a person says he is from a government agency he really is. You can only confirm this from the internet web sites - which agencies are for real and authorized and which aren't.
Phone numbers can be deceitful. Some scammers use different methods to cover their area code in caller IDs. Even if they can look like they are calling from a certain place in the US, it is probable that they could be calling from somewhere else in the world.
Control the calls that you receive. In order to reduce the number of unsolicited calls you get, register your number on the Nat'l Do Not Call Registry. You can register online or through the phone using the number you wish to register.
File a complaint. If you think that you have been scammed by anyone claiming to be someone from any of the government grants agencies, you can file a complaint online with the FTC. The FTC can enter your complaints in a secure database which can only be accessed by various criminal and civil law enforcement agencies in the US. Your complaints can be related to identity theft, internet or any fraudulent activities.
