The First World War was supposed to be the war to end all the wars, yet it did not solve anything, it never put a decisive stop to all the major problems at the time. Hence, we had the Second World War, the result of the League of Nation's failure on its primary purpose on preventing any future world war.
The Second World War was considered the biggest and most destructive armed conflict initiated by the Axis Coalition's totalitarian principles to oppose the democratic ideologies of the Allied countries. This is marked by major events (the Holocaust and the first and only use of nuclear weapons in warfare) which led to fifty to seventy million deaths. The conflict manifested itself from 1939 all the way to 1945 with the defeat of the Axis powers. The major participants of the war committed their entire industrial, economic and scientific capabilities for the whole war effort, with the act completely erasing the distinction between military and civilian resources.
The war is said to have started on September 1939 with Germany's invasion of neighboring Poland and the subsequent declaration of war announced by France and Great Britain on Germany. With a series of treaties and aggressive campaigns, Germany poised herself to establish and maintain a large empire in most of continental Europe despite Nazi-Soviet arrangements. It was noted that Great Britain remained as the only major force that resisted the continuously growing Axis power and influence in the North African and naval theaters prior to the official entry of the United States into the war.
By June 1941, the Axis powers in the European theater launched a coordinated invasion directed towards the Soviet Union, which started the largest land theater of war in known history. This attack had occupied the Axis military power for a good part in the Western theater, while Japan on the other hand, which went to war against China since 1937 had made good in its promises to dominate some parts in Asia and much of the Pacific Ocean by provoking and attacking the U.S. and European colonies in the region.
The seemingly invincible Axis advance was halted in 1942 after Japan's blunders in naval battles all over the Pacific Ocean and that of the European Axis forces in Northern Africa and in Stalingrad. The following year, they had totally lost the initiative and had gone on the defensive due to the Allied armies' strategic victories in battlefield Europe and in the Pacific. In 1944, they entered France while the Soviet Union regrouped and regained all of her lost territories and had geared up to attack Germany. Fighting on two fronts, Berlin finally fell under the attacking Soviets. This ended the war on Europe.
Subsequently, the war in Asia came to a full stop with Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945. The Second World War came to a conclusion in 1945 with the Allies' total victory over the Axis Powers. It altered the International political structure and gave birth to the United Nations to prevent future conflicts and encourage International cooperation.
