Installing TV to PC software on your computer lets you watch thousands of channels from all over the world, saving you hundreds of dollars in monthly cable bills as well as providing you access to programs not available from many cable providers. However, your computer will need to have the complete system requirements before you can begin to enjoy satellite TV stations on your PC, particularly if you want to watch HD programs. Here are the requirements you must have:
High-speed Internet connection. Keep in mind that satellite TV software is basically streaming video into your PC. If your connection is not fast enough, you will not get a smooth viewing experience as it will constantly slow down and even stop as it buffers. This is particularly true if you are watching programs in HD, since they require higher connection speeds. Many sites will even ask you if you want to stream a lower quality version instead if your connection is too slow for HD. If you are viewing satellite TV from your laptop speeds of 1 Mb/s are sufficient but if you are watching HD TV you will need speeds of at least 4 Mb/s. If you are not sure about the speed of your broadband connection, there are online broadband speed testers that you can use to check it.
Graphics card with built-in memory. To get the best from your TV to PC software, you will need a graphics card that can display the best resolution your monitor can support and should have its own resident memory chips to process graphics images. If your computer s graphics card shares system RAM with the PC to process images, then you will need to boost the amount of system RAM to ensure smooth video streaming.
HDMI Adapter. A High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) adapter allows you to connect your PC to your HDTV so that you can view satellite TV programs on your set. The most frequently-used adapters are Video Graphics Array (VGA) and Digital Visual Interface (DVI), which you can use to connect the computer to the HDTV using the HDMI port. If you don t have a spare VGA or DVI port, you will need a HDMI to USB adapter.
PC-TV tuner. These tuners allow you to watch full-motion, full-screen videos on your monitor, and come in two types: PCI cards and external USB tuners. A PCI card is installed in your PC while a USB tuner simply needs to be connected to the computer through the USB port. These tuners will also allow you to record satellite TV programs on your PC for later viewing.
Media player applications. These programs stream content from the Internet as well as from your hard disk. The most commonly used media player applications are Windows Media Player, Apple Quick Time and RealNetworks Real Player. Check out the system requirements of the PC to TV software that you are installing to see if it supports the media player you have on your computer; otherwise you may need to download and install a more advanced version of the application.
