Have you ever marveled what is the all-time most popular college course major in the US? Wonder no more, then. Based on analysis of raw annual data from the National Data Book of the US Census Bureau, Business is the top course major choice among tertiary students. Business courses steadily held the distinction of having the most number of graduates for the last 40 years. From the latest available figures, a total of 8,969,329 American students finished Business courses since the year 1971, or an annual average of 229,983 business graduates.
Based on the same raw data and the new Classification of Instructional Programs introduced during academic year 2002 to 2003, the second most popular course major since 2003 is Social Sciences (including History). Additionally, since 1971, a total of 4,977,883 American students took up and completed Social Sciences (including History) for an average of 127,638 graduates in a year. Meanwhile, the third most popular choice among college courses during the same period is Education, with a total graduate count of 4,561,740 and an annual average of 116,968 graduates.
College courses bracketed under the Business cluster include Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration and Management, Hotel/Motel Management, Marketing and Distribution, as well as Secretarial (Management and Administrative) Services. The United States is an industrial country and it is but natural that entering college students are encouraged to study business related areas in order to sustain the human resource requirement on the professional side of the growing business sector in the American economy. The number of students opting for Business course majors brought it on top of the rankings since 1983.
On the other hand, among the college courses under the Social Sciences (including History) major are: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Meanwhile, Education is a class in itself and the courses are differentiated in terms of the educational levels elementary, secondary or special education. The second and third most popular college major was hotly contested during the past 40 years between Education and the Social Sciences. The Social Sciences solidly held the second spot from 1971 to 1975 and from 1985 to date. From 1976 to 1983, it was either the favorite or the third favorite college major.
Incidentally, the bottom three college courses since 1971 are Library Science, Military Technologies and Precision Production, with total graduate counts since 1971 of 12,130, 5,786, and 599, respectively. Annually , the average number of graduates in the bottom three college courses are 311, 158, and 15. A cursory inspection of the yearly data for Library Science graduates revealed that the number steadily declined from a yearly turnout of 1079 during the early 1970s to 719 in the late '70s. The decreasing trend continued during the 1980s where the average graduate turnout dropped to 231 per year, to an even lower yearly average count of 72 in the 1990s. After posting an almost 200% increase in the year 2000, the graduate average in the past decade registered by Library Science was a measly 75.
From the analysis, it was apparent that the course choices among students have almost persisted through the years, with very few minor exceptions. However, while enrollment in Computer and Information Science courses ballooned during the 1990s, and given the explosion in computer technology know-how , it seems very interesting that computer-related courses never reached even the top ten. But that is another story.
